Nose, eyes, fingers, loupe, paperwork
Five checks in a fixed order, taking about three minutes. Four of them require nothing but attention, and the fifth needs a loupe costing a few euros. Between them they cover everything a buyer can establish without a laboratory.
The order matters. The nose works best before anything has been handled, the eyes before the material is broken open, and the paperwork last because it answers the questions the senses cannot reach rather than the ones they can.
This page sets out each step: what to do, what a good result looks like, what a poor one indicates, and what the step definitively cannot tell you. It ends with what to do when the five disagree with each other.

Nose first
Because olfactory adaptation sets in within seconds and because opening the container releases the accumulated headspace aroma once. That first moment is the most informative and it does not repeat in the same session.
Eyes second
Before handling, because handling redistributes loose material and changes what the surface looks like. The undisturbed state carries information that a shaken container does not.
Fingers third
The first step that changes the material. Pressure tells you about moisture in a way nothing else does, and it costs a small amount of gland loss to learn.
Loupe fourth, paperwork last
The loupe resolves what the eyes left ambiguous. The certificate then answers what none of the senses can reach: content, compliance and contaminants.
Step one: the nose
The technique
Open the container and inhale briefly, from a few centimetres, without putting your face into it. Close it, wait, and repeat once after the headspace has rebuilt.
What a good result is
A distinct aroma with identifiable character, present without being faint. The specific profile is a matter of variety and preference rather than quality.
What a weak result indicates
Age, a fast dry, or poor storage. It does not distinguish between them, and the certificate date is the first thing to check afterwards.
What a wrong result indicates
Damp cellar, ammonia or a chemical note. These are the odours that stop the inspection rather than continuing it, and they are the reason the nose goes first.
Step two: the eyes
The undisturbed view
Look at the surface before touching anything. Colour uniformity across the material, the presence of a frosted appearance, and whether the structures look intact or broken.
What frosted means
Dense trichome coverage catching the light. It is the single most useful visual indicator and it is independent of density, size and colour.
What to look for at the bottom
Loose material and dust. A significant quantity indicates either over-dry material or heavy handling somewhere between production and delivery.
The colour question
Deep green, pale green, purple and brown all occur legitimately. What matters is uniformity across the batch rather than the specific shade.
Step three: the fingers
The pressure test
Gentle compression of a single piece, watching whether it yields and whether it recovers. This is the most direct reading of moisture available without an instrument.
The correct response
Slight give, partial recovery, and a small stem that snaps rather than folds. That combination indicates moisture within the intended band.
Too dry
Crumbling to powder, dust on the fingers, and stems that shatter. The glands are already shedding and will continue to.
Too damp
No give at all in the stem, a cool feel, and compression without recovery. This is the reading that warrants opening a structure before going further.
Step four: the loupe
The instrument
Thirty to sixty times magnification, with light coming from the side rather than straight on. Raking light shows the stalks; direct light flattens everything.
What to look at
The glands themselves: whether they are present in quantity, whether the heads are intact on their stalks, and what proportion are clear, cloudy or amber.
What intact heads indicate
Careful handling from harvest onward. Heavily broken heads indicate machine trimming, rough transport or over-dry material.
What the colour proportion indicates
Mostly cloudy suggests a harvest at the conventional point. A large amber fraction suggests a late harvest or extended storage, and the certificate distinguishes between them.
Step five: the paperwork
The batch match
The number on the packaging against the number on the certificate. If they differ, the rest of the document describes something else.
The date
How long ago the analysis was performed. A long interval between then and delivery is time nobody measured.
The content and the calculation
The headline figure, and total THC as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877. The second is a calculation the buyer performs.
The panels present
Which analyses were commissioned beyond cannabinoids. Contaminant and microbiological panels are the lines that distinguish thorough documentation from minimal.
Breaking one open
When to do it
Whenever the fingers give an ambiguous reading, and on at least one piece from any purchase held for storage.
What it shows
The interior, which is where microbiological problems establish and where uneven drying is visible. External inspection does not reach it.
What good looks like
Uniform colour through the structure, consistent texture, and an odour that intensifies without changing character.
What to act on
Discolouration with soft edges, a texture difference at the core, or an odour that changes rather than strengthens.
What each step cannot tell you
The nose
Nothing about content, compliance or contaminants. It is a freshness and integrity instrument and it is excellent at that and nothing else.
The eyes
Nothing about potency. Frosted appearance correlates with gland density, which correlates loosely with content, and the certificate settles it.
The fingers
Nothing beyond moisture. It is a single-variable reading and a precise one within its scope.
The loupe
Nothing quantitative. It shows the state and integrity of the glands, not how much they contain.
The certificate against the senses
Where they overlap
Almost nowhere, which is why the sequence works. The senses address freshness, handling and integrity; the document addresses composition, compliance and contaminants.
Where they can conflict
A certificate showing high content on material that smells of nothing. Both can be true: cannabinoid content survives storage far better than aroma does.
What the conflict means
Old or badly stored material with intact compliance figures. This is the commonest form of disappointment and the senses catch it while the paperwork does not.
Which to believe
Both, for what each covers. The document is authoritative about composition and silent about freshness; the senses are the reverse.
Doing this at a physical counter
The advantage
The nose and the eyes work before purchase rather than after. This is the principal reason to buy in person and it is rarely stated as such.
What is reasonable to ask
To smell the material and to see it in reasonable light. A seller confident in what they hold has no reason to refuse.
What is not available
The fingers and the loupe, usually. Handling stock is not typically permitted and it is a fair restriction.
The certificate at a counter
Should be available on request, matched to the jar being sold from. A counter that cannot produce it is a counter selling on assertion.
Doing this on arrival from an order
The window
The first hours. A complaint about condition on arrival is straightforward; the same complaint three weeks later cannot be separated from domestic storage.
The sequence unchanged
Nose, eyes, fingers, loupe, paperwork. The order works identically whether the material arrived in a parcel or was bought at a counter.
What to record
A photograph of the material, a photograph of the batch code, and a note of what the nose found. Three items, taking two minutes.
What to do before storing
Complete the inspection first. Once the material is transferred and the packaging discarded, the evidence for any complaint has gone with it.
Building a reference over time
The notebook
Date, seller, product, batch code, and three words for the aroma. Five fields per purchase, taking under two minutes.
What emerges
Which sellers are consistent, how much variation is normal between batches, and what your own preferences actually are as distinct from what you assumed.
The reserve sample
A few grams set aside in a sealed opaque container at the moment of opening. Weeks later it is the only fixed reference against which the working material can be compared.
Why this beats memory
Sensory memory is unreliable and drifts toward the most recent experience. A written note and a physical reference do not.
When the five disagree
Good senses, thin paperwork
Material that presents well with a minimal certificate. What is unknown is contaminants, and no amount of sensory inspection reaches that question.
Good paperwork, poor senses
Full analytical panels on material that smells of hay. The batch was verified and has since aged. The document is correct and the material is disappointing.
Both poor
Straightforward. There is no interpretation required and no purchase to consider.
Both good
The expected outcome from a serious seller, and the reason for doing the inspection at all: it identifies the sellers worth returning to.
What this cannot substitute for
Analysis
Contaminants, compliance and content are laboratory questions. Nothing in this sequence approaches them.
Provenance
Where material was grown, how it was dried, how long it rested afterwards. None of it is visible and none of it is documented.
A guarantee
The inspection identifies problems. It does not establish that a product is good, only that the visible and detectable failures are absent.
Legal recourse
The document trail does that. The inspection tells you when to reach for it.
What a second opinion adds
Asking someone else to smell it
Handing the container to a person who does not know the price, the variety or the description removes the effect of expectation, which is larger than most people credit. Their first reaction is worth more than a third inhalation of your own.
Why this works
Knowing what a product cost and what it was described as measurably shapes what is perceived. This is documented across every field where sensory evaluation matters, and no amount of care neutralises it from the inside.
The practical version
Two containers, unlabelled, assessed by someone else. It takes a minute and it occasionally reverses a conclusion arrived at with complete confidence.
Where it does not help
On the visual and tactile steps, where expectation matters much less. It is an olfactory correction specifically.
Comparing two products side by side
The arrangement
Both at the same temperature, both in containers closed for the same period, assessed alternately rather than in sequence. Alternation is what makes a comparison rather than two impressions.
The pause
Thirty seconds between, breathing elsewhere. Without it the second is assessed on an adapted nose and the comparison is worthless.
The limit of two
At the third, discrimination collapses. Comparisons beyond a pair need separate sessions, which is inconvenient and unavoidable.
What the comparison establishes
A perceived difference, described in words. It does not establish which is better in any sense a document would recognise.
The steps that do not travel
Sensory findings
An impression cannot be sent to a seller, attached to an email or presented to a mediator. It exists for the person who had it and nowhere else.
What can be recorded
A written description made immediately, with a date. It is weaker than a measurement and considerably stronger than a recollection three weeks later.
Photographs
The visual step travels. Good light, a plain background, and a scale reference make images that a seller can look at and respond to.
The asymmetry this creates
The strongest inspection steps are the least transmissible. This is why the paperwork step exists in the sequence at all.
Where inspection has become routine
Other agricultural products
Coffee, tea, olive oil and wine all have formal sensory evaluation protocols, with vocabularies, panel procedures and training. The methods are mature and public.
What this category lacks
Any shared vocabulary or reference standard. Two sellers describing the same aroma will not use the same words, and no institution publishes a framework.
What can be borrowed
The structure rather than the terms: fixed order, controlled conditions, pauses between samples, written notes made immediately.
Why it has not happened here
A young sector, no regulatory driver, and no commercial interest in making offers comparable. The gap is likely to persist.
The inspection a seller performs
At the counter
Reputable retailers assess incoming stock on arrival, and the good ones reject batches. This is invisible to the buyer and it is a substantial part of what a specialist retailer provides.
The question to ask
Whether they inspect incoming batches and whether they have refused any. The answer, and how readily it comes, is informative about the operation.
What they can see that you cannot
Multiple batches of the same product over time, which is the comparison that reveals a producer’s consistency. No individual buyer accumulates that view quickly.
Why this matters to the sequence
A retailer who inspects has already run four of these five steps before the material reached the shelf. That is worth something and it is never itemised on a price.
The step people skip
Which one it is
The paperwork, almost always. The four sensory steps are immediate and satisfying; the fifth requires asking someone for a document and then reading it.
Why it gets skipped
Because the first four produce a conclusion that feels complete. Material that smells good, looks frosted and presses correctly seems to have answered the question already.
What it leaves unknown
Everything the senses cannot reach: content, compliance, and whether anything was screened for. Those are precisely the questions where being wrong has consequences.
The correction
Run the sequence as five steps rather than four plus an optional. The document is not a formality appended to a real inspection; it is the half of the inspection that the senses do not cover.
A short glossary
Olfactory adaptation
The rapid decline in perception of a continuous odour. It is why the first inhalation is the most informative and why pauses matter.
Headspace
The air above the material in a sealed container. It accumulates volatile compounds between openings.
Frosted
The visual appearance of dense trichome coverage catching light. A visual proxy for gland density.
Raking light
Illumination from a shallow angle, which shows surface relief. It is how trichome stalks become visible under a loupe.

The five checks that apply to any product
The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
How this connects to the rest
With storage
The inspection establishes the state on arrival. Everything after that is the buyer’s storage rather than the seller’s handling.
With the certificate
The paperwork step is where the document enters, and it answers precisely what the four sensory steps cannot.
With spotting contamination
The nose and the broken structure are the two steps that address it. Both come early in the sequence for that reason.
With consumer rights
The inspection window and the complaint window are the same window. Both close within days.

On every arrival
Run the sequence before storing anything. It takes three minutes and it is the only inspection that happens at a moment when a complaint is still simple.
At a counter
The first two steps, which are exactly the ones a parcel does not allow. This is what physical purchase buys.
