The cheapest form, and the one nobody can weigh
It is the cheapest form per milligram on the market, and the one that requires equipment most buyers do not have. A white crystalline powder of high stated purity, sold by the gram, which has to be weighed to be used at all.
That combination is the whole subject. The arithmetic is unusually favourable, the practical requirement is unusually demanding, and the gap between the two is where most of the disappointment lives.

A white, odourless, crystalline powder at room temperature. It has no plant character of any kind.
The composition
A single compound at high purity, typically stated as a percentage on a certificate, with everything else removed.
What was removed
Every other cannabinoid, every terpene, the waxes, the pigments and the plant material. The purification is thorough.
What that means
It is a chemical rather than a plant product, and it behaves like one: consistent, measurable, and without character.
How it is made
The starting point
A crude extract, from any route, containing the compound alongside everything else the plant carried.
The purification
Winterisation to remove waxes, then distillation to separate by boiling point, then crystallisation from a solvent to isolate the compound.
The final step
Crystallisation, in which the compound comes out of solution as a solid while impurities stay dissolved. It is a classical purification method.
The residual solvent question
Crystallisation uses solvents. A residual solvent panel is therefore relevant on an isolate, and its absence is a gap.
The purity figure
What it states
The proportion of the material that is the compound in question, measured against the total.
What it does not state
What the remainder is. A figure of ninety-nine per cent leaves a fraction unaccounted for, and the certificate should say what it consists of.
Why that matters
Because the remainder could be other cannabinoids, residual solvent, or process impurities. They are not equivalent.
What a good certificate does
States the purity, the full cannabinoid panel, and the residual solvent results. All three, on the finished material.

The quantities involved
Typical use is measured in tens of milligrams. That is a quantity most kitchen equipment cannot distinguish from nothing.
What a kitchen scale reads
Generally in whole grams, or at best in tenths. A tenth of a gram is a hundred milligrams, which is far coarser than the quantity being measured.
What is actually required
A scale reading to at least a tenth of a milligram, calibrated, on a stable surface, out of any draught.
What that costs
More than most buyers expect, and it is a one-off. Without it, the arithmetic advantage of the format is unavailable.
Why eyeballing fails
The density problem
A crystalline powder’s volume varies with how it settles. The same volume can be a substantially different mass.
The static problem
Fine powder carries a charge and clings to surfaces, spoons and containers. What leaves the jar is not what arrives.
The scale of the error
At these quantities, an estimate can be wrong by a large factor without looking obviously wrong. There is no visual check.
The consequence
Anyone using an isolate without a suitable scale does not know what they are taking. That is the honest position.
Dissolving it instead
The approach
Dissolving a weighed quantity into a known volume of carrier oil, producing a solution that can be measured by volume rather than by mass.
Why it helps
Volume is far easier to measure at domestic scale. A dropper delivers a reproducible quantity where a spoon does not.
What it still requires
One accurate weighing, at the start, of the whole batch. The scale is needed once rather than every time.
The arithmetic
Mass dissolved divided by volume of carrier gives concentration. From there, a known volume delivers a known quantity.
Making it dissolve
The requirement
Warmth and agitation. The compound is soluble in oils and it does not dissolve instantly at room temperature.
The temperature
Gentle warming, well below anything that would degrade the material. Patience substitutes for heat.
The check
Complete clarity, with no visible particles. Undissolved material settles and the solution is then not uniform.
The failure mode
Crystals reappearing on cooling, which means the concentration exceeded what the carrier holds at that temperature. Dilute further.
The price comparison
Per milligram
Isolate is generally the cheapest source of the compound available, by a substantial margin.
Why
Because it is a purified commodity produced at scale, with no plant character to preserve and no premium positioning attached to it.
What the comparison should include
The carrier oil, if you are making a solution, and the one-off cost of a suitable scale amortised over however long you use it.
What it frequently shows
That a finished oil costs several times what the same quantity of compound costs as isolate. The gap is formulation, packaging and margin.
What it cannot do
Carry a profile
There is nothing else in it. Any aroma or character in a finished product built from isolate was added afterwards.
Substitute for a full spectrum extract
Compositionally it is a different thing. Whether that matters is a question about effects, which is outside what we address.
Guarantee cleanliness
Purification removes what it removes. Contaminants that survive the process, and solvents introduced by it, both require panels.
Be assessed by eye
A white powder looks like a white powder. Nothing about its appearance distinguishes high purity from low, or one compound from another.
The identity question
Why it arises
A white crystalline powder is visually indistinguishable from many other white crystalline powders, including other cannabinoids and unrelated substances.
What establishes it
The certificate, with the batch code matching the packaging. It is the only identification available.
Why this matters more here than elsewhere
Because with flower or an extract, appearance and aroma provide some check. With an isolate they provide none at all.
What to insist on
A certificate for the specific batch, from an accredited laboratory, covering identity, purity and residual solvents.
Synthetic and semi-synthetic origins
Why it is relevant
A purified compound gives no indication of how it was produced. Plant-derived and synthesised material can be chemically identical.
The regulatory difference
Production route affects regulatory status, and novel routes are treated differently from extraction from the plant.
What a certificate shows
Composition. It does not generally show origin, and no routine panel establishes it.
The question to ask
How the material was produced. It is an ordinary supply chain question and the answer should be straightforward.
Storage
Why it is easier than most formats
A crystalline solid with no aromatic fraction has very little to lose. It is the most stable form in this category.
What still applies
Airtight against moisture, which the powder absorbs, and away from light and heat. The compound oxidises like any other.
What moisture does
Causes clumping and makes accurate weighing harder. It is a handling problem before it is a degradation one.
The practical arrangement
The original sealed container, in a cool dark place, opened briefly. It keeps for a long time.
Who this format actually suits
People who measure
Anyone prepared to buy a scale and keep records. The format rewards precision and punishes its absence.
People making things
Anyone formulating their own preparations, where a pure input of known concentration is exactly what is wanted.
Who it does not suit
Anyone wanting to open a bottle and use a dropper. The format requires work that finished products have already done.
The honest framing
It is an ingredient rather than a product. Buying it means taking on the formulation yourself.
What a suitable scale actually involves
The resolution
A tenth of a milligram, which is what allows a target of tens of milligrams to be hit with a tolerable error. A milligram resolution is workable and coarser.
Calibration
A calibration weight, used regularly. A scale that has not been calibrated reads confidently and wrongly, which is worse than not reading at all.
The environment
A level, stable surface away from draughts. At this resolution, air movement and vibration both register as mass.
The draught shield
Most instruments at this resolution include one, and it is not optional. An open scale in a room with any air movement does not settle.
The arithmetic, worked
The setup
Weigh a known mass of isolate into a known volume of carrier. The concentration follows directly from the division.
What that gives you
Milligrams per millilitre, which combined with a dropper’s delivered volume gives milligrams per drop.
Why measuring the dropper matters
Drop size varies with the dropper, the viscosity and the angle. Counting drops into a measured volume establishes it once.
What the record should hold
The mass used, the volume of carrier, the resulting concentration, and the date. Four numbers, written down, and the batch is documented as well as any commercial product.
Where this goes wrong in practice
Weighing on a poor scale
The commonest failure, and invisible. A reading appears, it is wrong, and nothing indicates it.
Incomplete dissolution
Warming too briefly, so that some material remains undissolved and settles. The solution is then not the concentration the arithmetic says.
Losing material to static
Powder clinging to the weighing vessel and the transfer. At these quantities it is a meaningful proportion.
Not writing it down
A solution of unknown concentration in an unlabelled bottle, several weeks later. It is the most frequent outcome of all.
The comparison people should run
Isolate against a finished oil
Take the price per gram of isolate, work out the cost of the compound in a finished product of the same brand or a comparable one, and divide both by milligrams.
What it typically shows
A multiple, frequently a large one. The finished product carries formulation, bottling, labelling, testing and margin.
Whether that gap is unreasonable
Not necessarily. Someone did the weighing, the dissolving and the documentation, and did it under a food safety framework.
What the comparison is actually for
Deciding whether you want to do that work yourself. The number tells you what your time is being valued at.
The decision, stated plainly
Buy the isolate if
You will buy a scale, you will write down what you made, and you want the cheapest source of the compound available. All three, not two of three.
Buy a finished product if
You want to open a bottle and use it. That is an entirely reasonable preference and the premium buys someone else’s weighing, dissolving and documentation.
What makes the choice go wrong
Buying the isolate for the price and then not buying the scale. The result is an unmeasured powder, which is the worst of both options.

The five checks that apply to any product
The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

What it demands in return is a scale and the discipline to use one. Without that, the cheapest source of the compound on the market becomes an unmeasured powder in a jar, which is worse than the finished product it was meant to undercut.
