CBDA: the form the plant actually makes
A living hemp plant contains almost no CBD. It contains CBDA — cannabidiolic acid — and CBD only appears once something applies heat. Drying, curing, extraction, decarboxylation in a vacuum oven: every step that warms the material converts a little more.
This is not a technicality. It changes what a number on a label means, and it is the mechanism behind one of the most common ways of overstating potency.
What the acid form is
Cannabinoids are built by the plant in acid form: CBGA, THCA, CBDA, CBCA. Each carries a carboxyl group — one carbon, two oxygens — attached to the molecule.
Heat knocks that group off as carbon dioxide. CBDA becomes CBD. THCA becomes THC. The reaction is called decarboxylation, and it is why raw cannabis is not intoxicating and heated cannabis is: THCA is not THC until you apply energy to it.
It also happens slowly at room temperature. An unheated extract stored for a year will contain less CBDA and more CBD than it did on the day it was made.
The number that matters: 0.877
The carboxyl group has mass, and when it leaves as CO₂ the material gets lighter. The ratio of the molecular weights gives a fixed conversion factor:
1 mg of CBDA yields about 0.877 mg of CBD.
So 1,000 mg of CBDA does not become 1,000 mg of CBD — it becomes roughly 877 mg. Around 12 % of the mass leaves as gas.
That factor is standard chemistry and is applied identically by every laboratory. Where it stops being neutral is on the label.
How “total CBD” inflates a number
Certificates of analysis usually report three figures:
- CBD — what is actually present as CBD.
- CBDA — what is present as the acid form.
- Total CBD — a calculated value:
CBD + (CBDA × 0.877).
Total CBD is a legitimate figure with a specific meaning: the CBD you would have if all the CBDA were converted. It is the right number for material that is going to be heated.
It is the wrong number for a product sold as raw. A raw oil is raw precisely because it was not decarboxylated — the CBDA in it is still CBDA, sitting in your bottle. Advertising its total CBD describes a conversion that has not happened and, for that product, is not supposed to.
Where this hits your wallet: if you compare price per milligram using total CBD on a raw product and actual CBD on a decarboxylated one, you are comparing a hypothetical against a measurement. Compare like with like — read the CBD and CBDA lines separately, and decide which one you are actually buying.
Raw versus decarboxylated
Neither is a grade. They are different chemical compositions, and the label word tells you which.

CBDA and CBD are not interchangeable molecules. They differ in structure, in solubility and in how they behave in the body. Whether that difference matters to you is a question nobody selling either one is allowed to answer.
Why this page stops there
You will find plenty of pages attributing specific effects to CBDA, often with more confidence than the research supports.
Two reasons we will not. Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006 authorises no health claim for any cannabinoid — not CBD, not CBDA. And the evidence base for CBDA specifically is thinner than for CBD, which is itself thin: EFSA has not been able to establish the safety of regular oral consumption of cannabidiol, reaffirmed that in 2025, and pointed to a provisional reference value in the order of 2 mg per day.
If you take prescription medication, that conversation belongs with a doctor or pharmacist: these compounds are metabolised by liver enzymes that also process a large number of drugs.
What to check on a certificate
- CBD and CBDA reported separately. A single merged figure hides which one you are getting.
- Whether the headline number is total CBD, and whether the product was decarboxylated. On a raw product, those two facts contradict each other.
- The batch number matching the container. A brand-level report tells you nothing about your bottle.
