There is one molecule the plant barely makes. It appears after harvest, slowly, in the jar, and its quantity rises with the months.
It is called cannabinol. On a certificate its row does not describe a variety or a technique: it describes a duration. It is the only figure on a report that speaks about elapsed time rather than about cultivation.

The direct consequence
Its quantity depends not on genetics but on the conditions and duration of storage. It is a product of time rather than of cultivation.
What that makes it
A marker. Not of quality, but of age — which is already information that few other rows provide.
The oxidation mechanism
What starts it
Oxygen, above all. Then light, which accelerates it, and heat, which accelerates it too.
The rate
It is not linear. A well-kept batch changes slowly over months; a badly kept one covers in weeks what the other would take a year to do.
The role of humidity
Excessive humidity favours other problems, including growth. Insufficient humidity makes the material brittle. Neither stops oxidation.
What actually stops it
Nothing. It is slowed: an opaque sealed container, a cool place, infrequent opening. That is the whole of what is available.
Why it rises with time
A stock in transformation
The THC present at harvest constitutes a reserve. Each month converts a fraction of it.
The ratio between the two
A young batch shows plenty of THC and almost no CBN. An older one shows the reverse, as conversion progresses.
The case of compliant flower
On flower from the European catalogue the starting THC is already very low. The quantity of CBN that can arise from it is therefore small by construction.
What this means when reading
On these products a measurable CBN row indicates long or poor storage, since the starting point was minimal.

An age
This is the principal and most reliable information. The higher the row relative to the remaining THC, the longer the batch has lived.
Conditions
A high value on a recent batch signals warm, lit or badly sealed storage. Time alone would not explain it.
A loss
What becomes cannabinol is no longer what it was. The transformation happens at the expense of the starting compound.
What it does not say
Nothing about cultivation quality, aroma profile, or the presence of contaminants. Those are other rows on the same document.
What it does not indicate
Any effect
The EU Register of nutrition and health claims contains no authorised entry for cannabidiol, and none for cannabinol either. Any statement of benefit falls outside the framework.
Any superiority
A batch richer in CBN is not a better batch. It is older, or less well kept. This is neutral data, not an argument.
Any compliance position
The regulatory threshold applies to total THC, not to this molecule. A high CBN row changes nothing in that calculation.
Any provenance
Oxidation proceeds identically everywhere. It tells you nothing about country or producer.

The row to find
Noted CBN, sometimes accompanied by its acid form CBNA. On many reports it sits below the limit of quantification.
The meaning of LQ
Below the measurement threshold of the method. That means not quantifiable, not absent — a distinction that recurs constantly and is understood badly.
What to read alongside it
The THCA and delta-9-THC rows. It is the ratio between them and the CBN figure that has meaning, never the isolated value.
The date of the report
Decisive here more than anywhere. An eighteen-month-old certificate describes a state the product no longer occupies.

The useful calculation
Divide the CBN content by the sum of total THC and CBN. The result gives the fraction already converted.
What a low value indicates
A recent batch or one very well kept. Below a few per cent there is nothing to note.
What a high value indicates
Long, warm or lit storage. On a product sold as fresh, that is a contradiction worth raising.
The limits of the calculation
It assumes the report is complete and recent. On a partial document the division stops meaning very much.
How to slow the process
The container
Opaque glass or metal, airtight closure, moderate fill. The residual air volume is what feeds oxidation.
The place
Cool, dry, dark. A low cupboard beats a shelf above a cooking appliance.
Opening frequency
Each opening renews the air. Taking out several days’ worth at once beats opening every morning.
What not to do
The freezer makes the glands brittle and causes condensation on return to room temperature. The loss is mechanical and immediate.
The case of oils
A different environment
In an oil the compound is diluted and protected by the fat. Oxygen reaches it less readily than on bare flower.
What accelerates it anyway
Light through a clear bottle, the heat of a bathroom, a dropper closed carelessly.
The visual indicator
A gradual darkening of the liquid. It proves nothing on its own but it frequently accompanies ageing.
What stays verifiable
The durability date and the batch number. Two mandatory particulars under food information rules.
The case of concentrates
An exposed surface
A resin spread thin offers a far greater exchange surface than a compact flower. Oxidation proceeds faster.
Suitable storage
Airtight container, small volume, cold but not frozen. Take out a little at a time.
What a concentrate certificate shows
The same rows, at much higher contents. A CBN figure of tenths of a per cent on a flower becomes significant on an extract.
The row not to forget
Residual solvents, if extraction used any. It has nothing to do with time but sits on the same document.
What ageing also does
To the terpenes
They go first, by evaporation. The aroma weakens well before the cannabinoids move appreciably.
To the appearance
The colour turns brown, the flower becomes friable, and the gland heads detach at the slightest contact.
To the weight
An over-dried flower loses mass as water. The content expressed as a percentage then rises without the actual quantity increasing.
What this implies when reading
All contents on a certificate are expressed on a dry basis, precisely to neutralise that effect.
Judging freshness without analysis
Smell
A clear, present aroma indicates terpenes still there. A smell of hay or cardboard indicates the opposite.
Touch
A flower that crumbles to powder under pressure has dried too far. A supple, slightly elastic one is in better condition.
Colour
Green turns slowly to brown. It is not an absolute criterion — some varieties are naturally dark — but the change is visible.
The limit of these indicators
None gives a figure. They orient, they do not measure, and a batch report remains the only reference.
What is sold under this name
Dedicated products
Oils and isolates marketed for this molecule exist. The scarcity is real, as it is for cannabigerol.
Where the material comes from
Often from deliberate conversion or synthesis rather than natural ageing. The process should be stated somewhere.
What to ask for
The batch certificate, the method of obtaining, and the detailed rows. A global total does not suffice.
The calculation to make
Price divided by milligrams of the target molecule. On scarce compounds the gap between offers is considerable.
Common reading errors
Confusing absence and non-measurement
LQ does not mean zero. It is the most frequent confusion on rows of this kind.
Adding without converting
Acid and neutral forms do not share a molar mass. For THC the factor is 0.877; it is not transferable as it stands.
Comparing different matrices
A percentage on flower and a percentage on oil do not compare. The scale is not the same.
Taking the row for an argument
A CBN content describes a state, not a property. Reading it otherwise leaves what the document says.
What the container itself contributes
Tinted glass
It filters part of the light spectrum that accelerates oxidation. This is why oil bottles are amber or green rather than clear, and it is a functional choice rather than a decorative one.
The volume of air
A jar half empty holds as much oxygen as material. Decanting into a smaller container as consumption proceeds reduces that reserve directly, and it costs nothing beyond owning two jar sizes.
The quality of the closure
An intact gasket separates an airtight container from one that breathes. Screw closures with silicone seals hold better than worn clip closures, and the failure is invisible without testing.
What bags are worth
A flexible pouch reseals badly, folds, rubs and admits air. It is the worst container for storage beyond a few days, whatever the product.
What transport does
What happens inside a parcel
Vehicle heat, vibration, compression. A summer shipment can expose a product to temperatures well above anything a domestic cupboard reaches.
The duration involved
Only a few days, but under unfavourable conditions. The effect is not negligible on material already close to its limit.
What this means for the date
A certificate issued before despatch describes a product that has not yet travelled. The gap exists and nobody measures it.
What can be done about it
Little, beyond decanting on arrival into a proper container and storing immediately away from light and heat.
Comparing two batches over time
The method
Ask the same producer for the reports of two harvests of the same variety, at different dates. The gap documents their consistency.
What it reveals
A producer whose profiles vary widely between batches controls their drying poorly. The genetics do not change from one harvest to the next.
The limit of the exercise
The year’s climate, the harvest date and crop management also play a part. The gap is not attributable to drying alone.
What it is worth
An indication of seriousness. A producer willing to supply several reports rarely has much to conceal.
The clock nobody publishes
What is missing from the record
No document states when a batch was harvested. The date of analysis gives an upper bound, and the durability date gives a producer’s declaration, but neither is the harvest itself.
Why this row partly fills the gap
Because oxidation runs at a rate that depends on conditions but never reverses. A high figure on a compliant flower means a long time has passed, under some combination of duration and poor storage.
What it cannot separate
Time from temperature. Three months in a warm warehouse and a year in a cool one produce comparable figures, and the row alone does not distinguish them.
The question that does
Asking the seller for the harvest date. It is not on any document, the seller knows it, and how readily the answer comes is itself informative.

Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

This is the subject of which the molecule is the measure. Everything that slows oxidation slows its appearance.
With reading a certificate
It is interpreted against the THC rows, never alone. The same principle applies to the other minor rows.
With the durability date
The measured ageing and the displayed date ought to agree. A gap raises a legitimate question.

An old batch sold at the price of fresh is simply badly paid for. The row allows that to be noticed.
