The difference between the two is not a degree of purity but a decision about what is allowed to stay. Nine percentage points separate them, and in those nine points sits everything that is not CBD.

Both are highly purified products from the same chain. The extra step an isolate takes removes exactly what a premium is paid for on a distillate.

What a distillate is

The purity range

Around ninety per cent, sometimes a little more depending on how the process was run. The remainder is not impurity at all, it is plant content.

How it arises

Through vacuum distillation, where components are separated by their boiling behaviour. The vacuum part is decisive.

Why vacuum

Because at normal pressure cannabinoids only boil at temperatures that would destroy them outright. Reduced pressure lowers the boiling point considerably.

What is removed

Waxes, chlorophyll residues, part of the terpenes and the less volatile components. What remains is a thick, golden mass that pours slowly at room temperature.

What an isolate is

The purity range

Ninety-nine per cent and above. Practically a single substance, with no notable remainder.

How it arises

Through crystallisation from a distillate, or through chromatographic separation. Both routes reach much the same result by different means.

What it looks like

A white, crystalline powder with no smell and no taste. It suggests no plant material and would not be distinguishable by eye from any other white powder.

What is removed

Everything but the target substance. Minor cannabinoids, remaining terpenes and pigments — entirely, and with no way of putting any of it back afterwards.

What sits in the nine points

Minor cannabinoids

CBG, CBC, CBN and others in small quantities. They come from the same plant, are still present in the distillate, and show as separate lines on the report.

Remaining terpenes

A small share survives distillation. It carries the smell a distillate still has.

Other plant compounds

Flavonoids and the like, in very small amounts. Hard to quantify, they rarely appear on a report and can therefore be neither confirmed nor refuted.

Why this is the whole argument

Because that fraction is the reason for the price difference. Whoever considers it valuable pays for a distillate.

How the two differ on the certificate

On a distillate

A high CBD value and, beside it, several small values for other cannabinoids. A profile with several lines.

On an isolate

A very high CBD value and, below it, practically zeros. A very characteristic, bare picture.

What both need

A solvent panel, because both routes use one. And a contaminant panel, because both concentrate heavily.

What the report does not show

Terpenes, unless a separate panel was commissioned. Precisely the fraction at issue is usually missing.

Why an isolate contains no THC

Because the separation is complete

At this degree of purity practically everything else has been removed, THC included. It is the cleanest answer to the threshold question.

Why that is a selling point

Because it removes legal uncertainty. For some applications that is the decisive point.

What it costs

The entire rest of the plant. An isolate is a substance, not an extract.

Why some want that anyway

Because it is exactly calculable. Whoever wants to work in a precise quantity of a substance has an easier task.

Why a distillate can still contain THC

Because the separation is incomplete

Ninety per cent means ten per cent of something else, and that can include THC. The value must be quantified.

Why the sum matters particularly here

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877. The factor comes from THCA losing a CO₂ molecule on heating and therefore becoming lighter.

How short-path distillation runs

The preparation

The extract must be winterised and decarboxylated. Waxes interfere, and acid forms distil differently from neutral ones.

The first pass

At low temperature the light fractions come over, mainly remaining terpenes and water. They are discarded or collected separately.

The second pass

At higher temperature the main fraction follows. That is the distillate proper.

The residue

Heavy components stay behind in the sump, including pigments and degradation products. They make up most of what was removed.

Why “short path” is in the name

The vapour’s route

Between evaporation and condensation there are only a few centimetres. The setup is deliberately compact.

Why that is necessary

Because a longer path means more time at high temperature. Cannabinoids degrade under it.

What the short path achieves

It cuts residence time to seconds. Thermal stress falls accordingly.

What follows from that

That the design of the apparatus decides quality here, not just the temperature. Two installations at the same setting give different results.

How an isolate crystallises

The starting point

A distillate, dissolved in a suitable solvent. Without that intermediate step it is not possible.

The sequence

Slow cooling until the target substance crystallises out. Everything else stays in solution.

Why it works

Because CBD crystallises more readily than the accompanying compounds under usual conditions. A fortunate circumstance on which the whole process rests.

The washing

The crystals are rinsed to remove adhering residues. Every wash raises purity and lowers yield.

Why both need a contaminant panel

Because the enrichment is enormous

From plant to isolate there are several purification steps. Whatever is not removed sits strongly concentrated at the end.

What travels and what does not

Heavy metals do not follow the boiling behaviour of cannabinoids and mostly stay behind. Some pesticides, however, distil along.

Why the names are not protected

None of the three is defined

Distillate, isolate and broad spectrum have no legal definition in this category. No body sets a threshold for any of them.

What that permits

An eighty-five per cent product can be sold as a distillate, and a ninety-seven per cent one as an isolate. Nothing stops either.

Why it rarely matters in practice

Because the certificate settles it regardless. The profile on the report is harder to argue with than a word.

What decarboxylation does before distillation

What it changes

Heat converts the acid forms into the neutral ones. CBDA becomes CBD, THCA becomes THC.

Why it is done first

Because the two forms distil at different temperatures. Separating them mid-process complicates everything.

The sum. The factor of 0.877 exists precisely because the conversion loses mass without losing substance.

Why it matters for the certificate

A decarboxylated product shows most of its content as neutral forms. That is expected, not a red flag.

If the distillate is not pure enough

Too many accompanying compounds and the target substance will not crystallise cleanly. The starting purity sets the ceiling.

Distillate

Isolate

Broad spectrum

Sump residue

One production run. The certificate applies to the batch, not to the product designation — and since none of the three names is protected, the profile on the report decides rather than the word on the packaging.

Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.

Total THC

A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, purity and pack size.

The claims

Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.

The seller’s details

Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
