Scissors, drum, and what separates them
An experienced operator finishes a few hundred grams an hour. A drum does several kilograms in the same time. The productivity gap is an order of magnitude, and it determines by itself most of the price structure of this sector.
This is not an opposition between a noble process and an industrial one. Each has measurable properties, identifiable costs and different consequences for the product. Both are justified according to volume and positioning.

By hand
Between two hundred and five hundred grams per hour per operator depending on variety, level of finish and experience. Individual variation is large.
By machine
Several kilograms per hour on a medium-sized machine, more on industrial installations.

A harvest that would take weeks of manual work is finished in a few days. On a seasonal production that is sometimes the difference between selling and losing.

Fresh material cannot wait. Throughput is not a comfort but a necessity beyond a certain volume.

Manual work
Several hours per kilogram, at an hourly cost depending on country and status. It is the principal labour cost after cultivation.
The equipment
An initial investment, depreciation, maintenance and consumption. The cost per kilogram becomes very low once the volume is sufficient.
The tipping point
It sits at an annual volume below which the equipment does not pay for itself. Many small productions stay manual for that reason.
What the buyer pays
That cost difference is passed on directly. It is one of the few price gaps in this sector whose cause is perfectly identifiable.

The common mechanism
Any handling detaches some. The question is not whether one of the two methods loses glands but how much each loses.
By hand
Contacts are numerous but light and directed. A substantial part of what detaches stays on gloves and tools, where it is recoverable.
By machine
Friction against walls and blades is continuous and undirected. The loss is higher and concentrates in the equipment.
Recovery
Both allow what detaches to be collected. A well-designed drum has a recovery compartment, and that fraction has commercial value.
The resulting appearance
Manual trimming
Clean edges, a preserved flower structure, perceptible variation from piece to piece. It is the signature of the human gesture.
Mechanical trimming
Rounded outlines, a slightly polished surface, far greater regularity of form. The flower looks rolled rather than cut.
What each gives to the touch
A hand-trimmed flower keeps its relief. One that has been through a drum has lost part of the irregularity of its bracts.
Recognition at purchase
It is the most reliable observation available, and it takes a few seconds. No document replaces it.
Sanitary sorting
What manual work permits
Every inflorescence passes through an operator’s hands. Pieces showing suspect marks, discolouration or an abnormal smell are set aside.
What the machine does not do
No inspection. A problem inflorescence goes through the equipment like the others and ends up in the final batch, possibly fragmented.
The real significance
It is the only moment in the whole chain when each piece is examined individually. That inspection has no equivalent anywhere else.
Why the argument is seldom made
Because it requires admitting that a batch can contain pieces to be set aside. Sellers prefer the aesthetic argument.
What the machine does better
Regularity
A batch that has been through a drum shows a uniformity of finish that no human team achieves on a substantial volume.
Consistency over time
Equipment does not tire and does not vary from one day to the next. The finish of the last kilogram resembles that of the first.
Speed at the end of harvest
It allows material to be finished before it degrades. On an outdoor harvest concentrated in a few days that is decisive.
The cost of the work
It removes a painful and repetitive job, with the documented musculoskeletal disorders that accompany it.
What the hand does better
Preserving glands
Less friction, directed contacts, more complete recovery. The gap is real even if it is hard to quantify precisely.
Adapting to morphology
A dense inflorescence and an airy one receive different gestures. A machine applies the same pass to both.
Inspection
Piece-by-piece sanitary sorting, with no equivalent elsewhere in the chain.
Relief
The bracts keep their irregularity, which preserves the frosted appearance visible under a loupe.

Rotating drums
The material turns inside a perforated cylinder against blades arranged outside. It is the most widespread type.
Belt models
The material travels on a conveyor and passes under a cutting head. Contact is briefer and more controlled.
Dry or wet models
Some equipment is designed for fresh material, some for dried. The mechanical properties differ entirely.

Rotation speed, blade clearance, pass duration. Each parameter changes the aggressiveness of the pass and the associated loss.

Speaking of mechanical trimming without specifying the setting says nothing. The gap between two workshops with identical equipment can be considerable.
The mixed solution
The principle
A first mechanical pass to rough out, then a manual pass on the pieces destined for sale as flower. It is a widespread practice.
What it provides
Throughput on the part of the work that requires no judgement, and the human gesture on the finish.
What it costs
A more complex organisation and an additional handling, therefore additional contacts.
What the buyer observes
An intermediate appearance, hard to classify. It is probably the most frequent case on the current European market.
What the commercial claim is worth
The usual mentions
Hand trimmed, hand finished, artisanal finish. They constitute a positioning argument and appear on many product listings.
What makes them unverifiable
No document attests the method. Neither the certificate of analysis nor the mandatory labelling particulars contain a corresponding field.
The check available
Appearance. Rounded outlines contradict a claim of hand trimming, and the inconsistency can be raised.
What a buyer can do
Set the claim against the product received. Where there is a manifest gap, consumer rules govern information on essential characteristics.
Working conditions
The repetitive gesture
Several hours of cutting in a static position. Wrist, elbow and shoulder disorders are documented in sectors where the operation is intensive.
The organisation
Rotating positions, regular breaks, adjusting seats and work surfaces. These are ordinary occupational risk prevention measures.
The status of operators
On seasonal productions it is often temporary labour. The question of employment conditions arises as in any agricultural sector.
What this adds to the debate
Mechanisation does not only answer a cost imperative. It also removes an arduous job, which is not a negligible argument.
What the certificate does not say
The method
No row mentions the mode of finishing. The document describes a composition, not a process.
The gland loss
It appears nowhere. Detached material frequently remains in the analysed batch as dust, which partly neutralises the analytical gap.
The sanitary inspection
Whether sorting occurred during trimming appears on no document. Only a microbiological analysis can reveal a problem, after the fact.
The conclusion
As with everything else in processing, direct observation is the only check available to a buyer.
Recognising it in a bag
The outlines
Clean and angular for manual work, rounded and polished for mechanical. It is the most discriminating criterion.
The bottom of the container
A substantial proportion of dust and fragments suggests an aggressive mechanical pass or very dry material.
Homogeneity
Regularity that is too perfect between pieces indicates a machine. Human work always leaves variation.
The loupe
It shows the state of the bracts. Preserved relief indicates a gentle pass, a flattened surface the opposite.
The history of mechanisation
The origin
The first equipment appeared in North American supply chains from the two-thousands onward, in response to volumes the available workforce could no longer absorb.
The European spread
It followed the development of the compliant hemp sector, with a lag of several years. The first equipped European workshops are recent.
Improvements in the machines
Successive generations have reduced the aggressiveness of the pass: variable speeds, better-profiled blades, integrated recovery compartments. The gap with manual work has narrowed without closing.
What this means for a buyer
Recent, well-set equipment gives a markedly better result than older equipment. A mention of mechanical trimming therefore says little without further detail.
What fresh or dried material changes
Mechanical trimming while wet
The material is supple and resists friction better. The glands, still turgid, detach less readily than after drying.
Mechanical trimming when dry
The material is brittle. Friction detaches far more glands and produces more fragments and dust.
Suitable equipment
Machines designed for wet material and those designed for dry have different geometries. Using one for the other gives a poor result.
What the buyer observes
A batch trimmed mechanically while dry typically shows more dust at the bottom of the container. It is the most direct indication.
Recovery within the equipment
The integrated compartment
Recent machines include a tray collecting what detaches. That fraction is concentrated in glands and constitutes a saleable product.
Cleaning
Blades and walls foul. Regular cleaning recovers additional material and maintains cutting quality.
What recovery represents
On a substantial volume it constitutes a real supplementary income. A workshop that neglects it loses money without noticing.
What this qualifies
Gland loss is not destruction. It changes destination, and its value is recovered elsewhere in the chain.
What the finish says about a workshop
In-process sampling
An organised workshop takes a few pieces from the equipment output at intervals to check that the setting has not drifted. It is an ordinary quality-control practice in any serial production.
What drift produces
Blades that foul cut less well and tear more. A correct setting at the start of the day can become aggressive by the end of a run without anyone noticing.
The useful frequency
One check per batch at minimum, more on long runs. The operation takes a few minutes and avoids losing part of the finish on the tail of a production.
What the buyer can deduce
A batch whose finish varies appreciably from piece to piece suggests that check was absent. It is an observation available from opening a single bag.

A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

This comparison is one of the few in this sector where the price gap has a perfectly identifiable and quantifiable cause. An operator and a drum do not produce the same quantity in the same time, and that order-of-magnitude gap directly explains the tariff structure.
What remains verifiable is the appearance, and it is verifiable completely: outlines, bract relief, bottom of the container. Three observations that separate the two methods without ambiguity, in a field where direct observation is almost always the only resource available.
