Why producers apply it anyway

Because it makes the material workable. Cold resin is difficult to handle and pressing it requires warmth.

The trade

More heat gives easier handling and a darker, less aromatic result. It is the same trade as everywhere else in this subject.

🔴 What colour does not indicate

Content

No relationship. A pale resin and a dark one can measure identically, and the certificate settles it.

Compliance

Total THC, calculated as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, is not visible in any respect.

Contamination

Pesticides and heavy metals are colourless at the concentrations that matter. Nothing about appearance addresses them.

Dark with strong aroma

Suggests heat or dark starting material rather than age. Volatile compounds survive processing better than they survive time.

Dark with weak aroma

Suggests age or extended storage. This is the combination that indicates the material has been around.

Pale with weak aroma

Suggests heavy refinement, or a starting material that was already depleted before processing.

What the starting material contributes

Variety differences

Gland colour varies between varieties even at the same maturity. Some produce naturally paler resin.

Maturity at harvest

Later harvests give material with a higher proportion of amber glands, which contributes a darker base colour.

Fresh against dried input

Fresh frozen input generally gives paler results, because less oxidation occurred before the glands were separated.

Why this complicates everything

Because it means the base colour before processing already varies. Comparisons across sources start from different points.

Why it does not work

Pressing and its effect

What pressing does to colour

Darkens it, through the combination of heat and the rupture of gland heads releasing their contents.

Why it is done

To reduce surface area, slow oxidation, and produce a form that handles and packages more easily.

What it costs

Aromatic compounds, at a rate depending on the temperature applied.

What a buyer sees

A darker, cohesive product. It says something about handling and nothing about the purity of what was pressed.

Storage and appearance

What changes

Darkening, progressively. It is the most visible ageing indicator on a resin.

The rate

Set by surface area, temperature and light. A loose powder darkens faster than a pressed block.

The container

Airtight, opaque, cold, minimal headspace. The same as everywhere and it visibly slows the change.

What it does not slow

The aroma decline entirely. Storage helps and nothing stops it.

What producers know about colour

That it sells

Pale material commands a premium consistently. It is a well-established market preference.

That it is manipulable

Refinement steps, careful mesh selection and gentle handling all lighten a result. Some of that improves the product and some only its appearance.

Where the two diverge

Decolourisation removes pigment along with other compounds. It lightens without improving anything else.

What a buyer should note

Pale is a genuine indicator when it results from clean processing, and a manipulable appearance otherwise. The two are not distinguishable by looking.

Content

The cannabinoid figures, on the finished product. Unaffected by appearance in any direction.

Contaminants

In traditional producing areas, colour did track production method reliably, because within one region the input, the technique and the equipment were broadly consistent from producer to producer.

The variables that would otherwise confound the reading were held constant by local practice. Colour therefore reflected the one thing that varied, which was care.

Why it stopped working

An international market brought together material from every kind of input and process. The constants disappeared and the reading lost its basis.

What survived anyway

The vocabulary, which continues to be used as though the context that gave it meaning were still in place. It is a common pattern in this sector.

The star ratings

What they are

An informal commercial grading scale, applied by sellers to their own stock, generally on a scale of a few points.

What defines the levels

Nothing shared. Each seller sets their own thresholds and applies them by their own judgement.

What to look for

The proportion of recognisable gland heads against amorphous material. A fraction of intact heads is what a gentle process produces.

Fibrous, irregular, and clearly not spherical. It is unmistakable once seen and invisible without magnification.

Why this beats colour

Because it observes the actual composition rather than a property with four causes. It is the single most informative visual check available.

Buy the two grades a seller offers and compare them directly. It establishes what their grading means, which no description does.

Same seller, two batches
