Three variables account for almost everything that happens to flower in storage. The container it sits in, the place that container sits in, and how often it gets opened. All three are free, and the products sold to address them are optional additions rather than substitutes.

What degrades is not mysterious. Volatile compounds evaporate, oxygen transforms what remains, light accelerates both, and moisture either encourages microbiological growth or leaves the material brittle. Four mechanisms, each with a known countermeasure.

This page covers what each mechanism does, what the three controllable variables achieve, what the common accessories are actually for, and which widely repeated storage practices make things worse.

Evaporation

The aroma compounds are volatile at room temperature, which is precisely why they can be smelled. Every hour in contact with air removes a fraction, and every opening of the container removes the concentration that had built up in the headspace.

Oxidation

Oxygen transforms the remaining compounds into different ones. This is the mechanism behind the CBN line on a certificate, which is why that figure functions as a record of both age and storage conditions.

Photodegradation

Light, particularly its ultraviolet component, breaks specific bonds. It is the fastest of the four mechanisms and the only one that can be eliminated completely rather than merely slowed.

Moisture movement

Water migrates between the material and the surrounding air until they reach equilibrium. Too much supports microbiological growth; too little leaves the material brittle and shedding its glands.

What it has to do

Exclude light, hold a seal, and be the right size for the quantity remaining. Those three properties address three of the four mechanisms directly.

Glass

Inert, sealable and available in every size. Amber or green glass filters part of the damaging spectrum; clear glass looks better and protects less, which is a genuine trade rather than a marketing one.

Metal

Opaque by construction, which removes the light question entirely. The seal quality varies more than on glass, and the interior finish matters because bare metal is not inert with everything.

Plastic

Many polymers are permeable to gases over months, and some carry a static charge that pulls loose glands onto the walls. Adequate for days, poor for longer.

The headspace problem

What it is

The volume of air above the material in a sealed container. That air contains oxygen, and the oxygen does not run out — it reacts, and each opening replaces it.

The arithmetic

A jar half full holds roughly as much air as material. As the contents diminish, the ratio worsens steadily, which means storage gets worse over the life of a purchase rather than better.

The fix that works

Decanting into a smaller container as the quantity falls. It costs nothing beyond owning two or three jar sizes and it addresses the mechanism directly.

Why vacuum is not the obvious answer

Removing air removes oxidation, but a vacuum also draws volatile compounds out of the material and concentrates handling damage. It suits long-term storage of material that will not be inspected.

The place

The three requirements

Cool, dark and stable. Stability matters as much as the absolute values, because temperature swings drive condensation inside a sealed container.

What qualifies

A low cupboard in a room that is not heated hard, away from external walls and appliances. This description covers most of what is needed and costs nothing.

What does not

Windowsills, shelves above cooking appliances, bathrooms, and the interior of a car. Each fails on at least two of the three requirements simultaneously.

The refrigerator question

It is cool, but every removal causes condensation on the container and its contents as they warm. The moisture cycling does more damage than the temperature gain avoids.

The opening frequency

Why it is the third variable

Each opening exchanges the headspace air, releases the accumulated aroma, and usually involves physical contact with the material. Three of the four mechanisms are touched in one action.

The habit that helps

Decanting a few days’ worth into a small working container, and leaving the main storage closed. The bulk of the material is then opened weekly rather than daily.

What this achieves

On a purchase consumed over a month, the difference between daily and weekly opening of the main container is substantial and requires no equipment.

The measurable consequence

Aroma retention, principally. The compounds that go first are the ones that leave through the headspace, and they are also the ones a buyer notices.

Humidity control packs

How they work

A two-way membrane holds a saturated salt solution at a fixed water activity. The pack absorbs moisture above that level and releases it below, holding the container in a narrow band.

The range in use

Packs are sold at several set points, with the values around sixty per cent relative humidity being the ones intended for this material.

What they do not do

They do not slow oxidation, do not exclude light, and do not repair material that arrived too dry. They address one mechanism of four.

When they earn their cost

On quantities held for more than a few weeks, and in dry indoor climates where material would otherwise become brittle.

Hygrometers

What they measure

The relative humidity of the headspace air, which is the figure that matters rather than the water content of the material itself.

The calibration problem

Inexpensive units drift, and a reading off by five points sits on the wrong side of the threshold that matters. A salt test against a known reference resolves it and takes a few hours.

What a reading is good for

Confirming that a control pack is working and that a container is actually sealing. Both are yes-or-no questions rather than fine measurements.

What it cannot show

Whether moisture is evenly distributed through the material. Headspace air equilibrates faster than the interior of a dense flower.

What arrives in the post

The state on arrival

The material has been packed, stored at a distributor, and transported through uncontrolled conditions for several days. None of that appears on any document.

The first action

Open, look, smell, and decide within the first hours whether it matches the description. That window is when a complaint is straightforward.

The second action

Transfer to a proper container. The packaging a product ships in is designed for transport rather than storage, and flexible packs in particular seal poorly.

What to keep

A photograph of the batch code and the durability date before the outer packaging is discarded.

Long-term storage

When it applies

Quantities that will not be consumed within a few months. The trade-offs shift because inspection frequency drops to near zero.

What changes

Vacuum sealing and inert-gas flushing become reasonable, because the downside — removing volatile compounds and blocking inspection — matters less when the material is not being handled anyway.

Portioning

Dividing into single-use quantities means the bulk is opened once. Each portion is then a small sealed unit rather than a repeatedly disturbed large one.

The honest limit

Nothing stops degradation. Long-term storage slows it, and material stored perfectly for a year is still older material.

The freezer question

The appeal

Cold slows every chemical process, and freezing appears to be the logical extension of cool storage.

The mechanical problem

Frozen trichome stalks become brittle. Any handling of frozen material shears the glands off, and they end up on the container wall rather than the flower.

The condensation problem

Material removed from a freezer is below the dew point of the surrounding air. Water condenses onto it immediately, and the moisture cycling that follows is exactly what storage is meant to avoid.

The exception

Material frozen once, undisturbed, and processed while still frozen. That is an industrial procedure for extraction inputs rather than a domestic storage method.

Storing in the original packaging

Flexible pouches

They reseal poorly, flex in handling, and the friction of the material against the interior shears glands. Adequate for the journey, inadequate afterwards.

Cardboard tubes

Opaque, which addresses light, but they seal against neither air nor moisture and they absorb what they do contain.

Glass supplied by the seller

Sometimes excellent. Where a product ships in a sealed opaque jar of the right size, no transfer is needed.

The general rule

Assess the container that arrived on the same three criteria as any other. Some pass and most do not.

What storage does to a certificate

What stays valid

The cannabinoid content, the compliance calculation and the contaminant results. None of these change materially over ordinary storage periods.

What stops describing the product

The terpene profile, if one was measured. Volatile compounds decline from the day of packing, and a profile measured at production describes a state the material has left.

The degradation marker

The CBN line, which increases with age and with exposure. Comparing it between two batches of the same product gives an indication of relative age.

The practical reading

A certificate is authoritative about composition and approximate about freshness. Storage moves the second and leaves the first alone.

The microbiological boundary

What sets it

Water activity, which is what humidity control actually manages. Above a certain level, microbiological growth becomes possible in a sealed container.

The regulatory reference

Microbiological criteria for foodstuffs are established at Union level, and analysis against them is the only way to establish a result rather than an impression.

The domestic version

Keeping the container within the intended humidity band, and inspecting before use. Neither is a measurement, and both are better than nothing.

What to do with a doubt

A material that smells of damp earth, ammonia or a cellar should not be used, and no storage correction addresses a growth that has already started.

What the material tells you by touch

The correct feel

Slight give under gentle pressure, with partial recovery of shape. That combination indicates moisture within the intended band, and it is a more direct reading than any instrument gives, because it reflects the interior rather than the surrounding air.

Too dry

Crumbling to powder at a touch, with visible dust in the container. The glands have already begun shedding, and the material will continue losing them with every subsequent handling.

Too damp

No snap at all, a slightly cool feel, and material that compresses without springing back. This is the state in which microbiological growth becomes possible, and it warrants inspection before anything else.

Why touch beats instruments here

A hygrometer reads the headspace air, which equilibrates within hours. The interior of a dense flower takes considerably longer, and a container can read correctly while the material inside has not caught up.

Recovering material that dried out

What can be done

Moisture can be reintroduced slowly, using a two-way pack in a sealed container over several days. The material regains flexibility and stops shedding.

What cannot be recovered

The volatile compounds that left while it was drying out. Those are gone, and no amount of rehydration brings aroma back to material that lost it.

What must be avoided

Anything fast. Introducing water directly, or using a damp material in contact with the flower, raises surface water activity sharply and creates exactly the conditions for growth.

The realistic assessment

Rehydration restores handling properties and nothing else. It is worth doing to stop further gland loss, not because it recovers what was lost.

Two containers instead of one

The arrangement

A main container holding the bulk, opened weekly, and a small working container holding a few days’ worth, opened as often as needed.

Why it works

The bulk is exposed to fresh air, light and handling a fraction as often. The working quantity degrades faster, but it is consumed before that matters.

What it costs

The price of a second small jar. This is the highest return available for the lowest outlay anywhere in the storage question.

The refinement

Sizing the working container so it is nearly full each time it is refilled. A small jar with a large headspace defeats part of the purpose.

Labelling what you store

What to write on the jar

Product, seller, batch code and the date it arrived. Four fields, on a piece of tape, taking under a minute.

Why the batch code specifically

Because the packaging it was printed on is about to be discarded, and it is the only link between the material and its certificate.

What this makes possible

Comparing two purchases meaningfully. Without a record, a perceived difference between orders has no first explanation to check.

The version that survives

A photograph as well as the tape. Tape falls off, and photographs carry their own timestamps.

What storage cannot fix

A bad dry

Material dried too fast in a warm room arrives without its volatile compounds and with an uneven moisture distribution. Storage holds it where it is; nothing moves it back.

An old batch

Time already elapsed at the producer or distributor is invisible and irreversible. The CBN line on a certificate is the only indication, and it is rarely compared between purchases.

Existing contamination

A microbiological growth established before delivery continues regardless of the container. This is a question for a complaint rather than a storage adjustment.

The honest framing

Storage determines how quickly a product declines from the state in which it arrived. It has no bearing on what that state was.

The cost of getting it wrong

What it looks like in money

A purchase stored badly for six weeks loses most of what a buyer paid a premium for. The compliance figures survive; the aroma, which is the part that was actually being paid for above the commodity price, does not.

Why it goes unnoticed

Because the decline is gradual and there is nothing to compare against. The material seems acceptable until a fresh purchase arrives and the gap becomes obvious in a single side-by-side comparison.

The reserve that makes it visible

Setting aside a small quantity in a sealed opaque container at the moment of opening. Weeks later it is the only fixed reference point available, and it costs nothing but a few grams and a small jar.

A short glossary

Headspace

The volume of air above the material in a sealed container. It holds the oxygen that drives oxidation and the aroma compounds that escape on opening.

Water activity

The availability of water for microbiological growth, distinct from total water content. It is what humidity control manages.

Two-way humidity pack

A sealed membrane holding a saturated salt solution, which absorbs and releases moisture to hold a container at a set relative humidity.

Photodegradation

Breakdown of compounds under light, particularly its ultraviolet component. The only degradation mechanism that can be eliminated entirely.

Decanting

Transferring the remaining material into a smaller container, reducing the headspace as the quantity falls.

The five checks that apply to any product

The batch certificate

Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.

Total THC

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.

Price per milligram

A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.

The claims

Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.

The seller’s details

Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

How this connects to the rest

With aroma

The compounds that go first are the ones a buyer notices. Storage is mostly a question of keeping them where they are.

With the certificate

The report describes the day of sampling. Storage determines how far the material has moved from that description.

With batch comparison

A difference between two purchases is often a storage difference rather than a production one, and the batch code settles which.

With consumer rights

A complaint about condition is straightforward on arrival and becomes untestable after weeks of domestic storage.

What this is for in practice

On arrival

Inspect, then transfer to a suitable container. Photograph the batch code before the packaging goes.

For the working quantity

A small container holding a few days’ worth, so the main storage is opened rarely.

For the main storage

Opaque, sealed, sized to the contents, kept somewhere cool and stable, decanted smaller as it empties.

For anything held long

Portion it, seal it, and accept that slowing degradation is the whole of what is available.

Storage is the one part of this chain that belongs entirely to the buyer. Everything before it — growing, drying, curing, trimming, testing, shipping — is decided by other people and recorded, at best, partially. What happens after delivery is decided by whoever owns the jar.
