Cutting by hand or running the harvester
The decision to harvest by hand or by machine is not taken at harvest. It is taken before planting, because it determines the variety sown, the row spacing, the target height and the commercial destination of the crop.

Plants must be of comparable height and within the range the machine accepts. This shapes the choice of variety.

Heavy equipment cannot enter a waterlogged plot. Rain at the wrong moment blocks the harvest for several days.

Compression

Mixing
Leaves, stems and flowers arrive together in the hopper. Separation then has to happen afterwards, adding a handling step.
The result
Material usable for extraction, rarely saleable as whole flower. It is the principal consequence and it is well documented.
What the hand preserves
Inflorescence integrity
They stay whole and attached to their branch until the drying room. No compression, no conveying.
Selection at the cut
The operator sees what they cut and can set aside anything problematic. It is a first sanitary sort.
Staggered harvest
Cutting the most advanced tops first and returning a few days later for the rest. No machine allows it.
The cost
Several person-days per hectare, within a narrow window. It is the heaviest labour cost of flower production.
The equipment used
Mowers
They cut the stem at a chosen height and lay the plant on the ground or into a trailer. It is the basic equipment for fibre.
Combines
Adapted for seed, they separate the grain from the straw. The settings differ from those used for cereals.
Dual-cut machines
They separate the upper part, rich in inflorescences, from the lower part destined for fibre. It is a compromise developed recently.
Specialised harvesters
A few machines target flower harvesting specifically with less aggressive conveying. Their diffusion remains limited.

The principle
A first cutting organ takes the tops and directs them into a hopper, a second mows the rest of the stem for fibre.
What it permits
Valorising two products from the same plot in a single pass. That is economically interesting.
What it does not solve
The inflorescences still undergo mechanical conveying. They suit extraction, rarely sale as flower.
Where it is used
On mixed fibre and cannabinoid productions, which are developing in Europe within the common agricultural policy framework.

Cost per hectare
A mechanical harvest costs a fraction of what a manual one costs. The gap is measured in orders of magnitude.

It is inverted: a whole flower sells for several times the price of material destined for extraction.

Rain before harvest
It wets the inflorescences and sharply increases the risk of fungal development, especially on dense morphologies.
Moisture at the cut
Material harvested wet arrives at the drying room with a higher water load. Drying is complicated by it.
Soil bearing capacity
It conditions the entry of machinery. A waterlogged plot blocks a mechanical harvest where a team on foot could work.
The trade-off
Every year poses the question differently. It is the principal source of uncertainty in outdoor production.
What the variety imposes
Compact-habit varieties
Selected to stay within the range machines accept. They facilitate mechanical harvesting.
Tall varieties
They maximise production per plant but exclude most equipment. They imply a manual harvest.
Uniform maturity
A variety whose plants all reach the same stage allows a harvest in a single pass. It is an explicit selection criterion.
The European catalogue
Varieties cultivable in the Union appear in the common catalogue of agricultural plant species. Breeders’ technical sheets specify harvesting suitability.
What the agricultural framework covers
Support
The regulation establishing rules on support for common agricultural policy strategic plans organises the aid applicable to cultivated areas.
Area declaration
It conditions access to that support and requires the use of varieties listed in the European catalogue.
Controls
They are carried out on standing crops, according to defined protocols, with sampling at stages specified in the applicable rules.
The threshold
Total THC, calculated as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, must stay below the limit set for cultivation.
What a buyer can recognise
A whole flower
An identifiable structure with a central axis, clean outlines, preserved morphology. It necessarily comes from a manual harvest or from very gentle equipment.
Fragmented material
Debris, pieces of inflorescence, a substantial proportion of dust. It suggests a mechanical harvest or excessive handling downstream.
The limit of the observation
Harsh drying and careless packaging produce similar effects. The origin of fragmentation is not always attributable.
What remains certain
A whole, intact flower has not passed through a harvester. That is the only solid deduction.
The link with price
The cost structure
Manual harvesting represents a substantial cost, passed on to the selling price. It is a technically grounded gap.
What the market sanctions
Fragmented material does not sell at whole-flower prices. The difference is observable on any catalogue.

A product sold at whole-flower price and showing substantial fragmentation raises a question of conformity to the description.
The reference calculation
Price per milligram of the principal compound. For extraction it is the only criterion; for flower it is completed by observation.
Common errors
Generalising to the whole sector
The majority of European area is cultivated for fibre and seed, where mechanisation raises no question.
Opposing artisanal and industrial
These are two complete cultivation systems, chosen at planting according to the outlet. Neither is a moral choice.
Attributing all fragmentation to harvesting
Drying, trimming, packaging and transport produce it too. The origin is rarely attributable.
Believing in a mechanical harvest of premium flower
No common equipment preserves inflorescences well enough to permit sale as quality whole flower.
Organising a day of manual harvest
The preparation
Sharpened secateurs, rigid transport crates, a drying room ready and ventilated, a briefed team. A badly prepared harvest leaves cut material waiting, which degrades it within hours.
The rhythm
Cutting follows the drying room: there is no point cutting faster than the hanging capacity. A bottleneck at the hanging stage cancels any speed gained in the field.
Transport
Branches travel in rigid crates rather than sacks, to avoid compression. Every additional transfer is one more contact with the material.
The end of the day
All cut material has to be hung before nightfall. A pile left waiting heats through respiration and begins degrading before drying has even started.
What the cut itself determines
Branch length
Long branches ease hanging and limit later handling. Short branches fill the drying room better but multiply the attachment points.
Density in the drying room
It depends directly on how the harvest was cut up. A cut planned for the drying room avoids contact between neighbouring branches.
Sorting at the cut
The operator sets aside branches showing suspect marks. It is the first of three possible sanitary checks, before trimming and before bagging.
What the machine removes
Those three decisions disappear. A mechanical harvest delivers an undifferentiated mass, and all the sorting has to happen afterwards, on already fragmented material.
The intermediate storage question
Between field and drying room
On a mechanical harvest of any volume, material sometimes waits several hours in a trailer before being spread. It heats and begins degrading.
What heat produces
Residual respiration raising the temperature at the core of the pile. On a substantial volume that rise can be rapid and significant.
What this imposes
Sizing the drying room in line with harvesting capacity. A machine that harvests faster than the drying room absorbs creates a costly bottleneck.
What the buyer sees of it
Nothing directly identifiable, except material whose smell and colour sometimes betray the beginning of degradation before drying.

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
