The selection a grower runs

Growing a population, observing every individual, and keeping the ones that perform best. It is ordinary selection and it has no shortcut.

What is observed

Structure, timing, yield, aroma, and where the grower can afford it, a laboratory analysis of the composition.

How many plants

Enough that the best of them is genuinely good. A handful gives a poor chance; dozens give a better one.

What happens to the rest

They are grown out and harvested like any other plant. The material is fine; it simply was not the one being looked for.

What happens to the plant that is kept

It becomes a mother

The selected individual is held in vegetative growth and reproduced by cuttings. Everything afterwards is a copy of that one plant.

Why that resolves the variation

Because cuttings do not recombine. Once the selection is made, the variation problem is solved for as long as the line lasts.

A variety name narrows a search and does not settle a comparison. The certificate does the settling.

The catalogue and uniformity

What is required

A variety cultivated for the compliant market must appear in the common catalogue of varieties of agricultural plant species and stay within the total THC limit.

The three criteria

Distinctness, uniformity and stability. The examination tests all three against defined protocols.

What uniformity means there

Variation within accepted tolerances for the characteristics examined. It does not mean identical individuals.

Why it matters here

A catalogue variety has had its variation formally assessed. A commercial name that is not a catalogue name has not.

What growing conditions add

The environmental half

The same genotype produces different phenotypes under different light, temperature, nutrition and water. Some of what looks like genetic variation is not.

How growers separate them

Which individual, from which population, produced the crop. Nothing carries it.

The honest position on variety names

What they convey

A general character and a family resemblance. That is real and it is useful for narrowing a choice.

What they do not convey

Composition, potency, or anything measurable. Two products under one name can differ substantially on every measured axis.

What settles it

The certificate, which measures the batch that is actually being sold rather than the population it came from.

The reasonable use

Names to shortlist, certificates to choose. It is the same division that applies everywhere in this subject.

What a proper selection trial looks like

The setup

Siblings grown side by side in one space, under identical light, feed and watering, with position rotated so that no plant benefits from a better spot than another.

Why the controls matter

Without them, a plant nearest the light outperforms one at the edge, and the grower selects for position rather than for genetics. It is the commonest failure in informal selection.

What is recorded

Height and structure at fixed intervals, the date each plant enters and completes flowering, the harvested weight, and where the budget allows, a composition analysis of each.

Why writing it down matters

Because selection is a comparison across weeks, and memory does not hold a dozen plants accurately over that span. The record is what makes the comparison real.

The case against it

It complicates every operation, it makes harvest timing a compromise, and it makes a crop unpredictable. Production growers eliminate it for good reasons.

The case for it

It is the only source of anything new. Every variety that exists came out of a population that varied, and every future one will too.
