What the plant measures, and it is not the day
The plant is not counting daylight hours. It is measuring how long the dark period runs without interruption, and it will stay in vegetative growth as long as that period stays short — however brief the interruption that keeps it short.
The distinction sounds like pedantry. It stops sounding like pedantry the first time a grower loses a crop to a status light on a timer, visible for a fraction of a second through a gap in a curtain.

What matters is how many continuous hours of darkness the plant experiences. Once that exceeds a threshold, flowering is induced.
Why this was established
Classic photoperiod experiments across many species showed that interrupting the dark period with a brief flash of light abolishes the flowering response, while interrupting the light period does nothing.
What the terminology obscures
The word photoperiod points at the light. The mechanism points at the dark, and the vocabulary has never caught up.
The mechanism
The pigment
A light-sensitive protein exists in two interconvertible forms. Light converts it one way; darkness lets it revert slowly back.
What the reversion does
It functions as a timer. The proportion in each form at the end of a dark period reflects how long that period lasted.
Why an interruption resets it
A flash of light converts the pigment back to its light form instantly. The timer starts again, and the accumulated darkness is discarded.
Why brief light is enough
Because the conversion is a photochemical reaction, not a dose-dependent process. It does not take much light and it does not take long.
The critical threshold
What it is
A dark period length above which flowering is induced and below which it is not. It differs between varieties.
The conventional figure
Around twelve hours for most of what is grown, which is why the twelve-on twelve-off schedule dominates indoor practice.
Why varieties differ
Because they were selected in different latitudes, where the season and the day length pattern differ. The threshold is an adaptation.
What that means practically
A variety adapted to a low latitude may not flower reliably at a high one, and the reverse can flower too early to build any size.

What counts as a leak
Any light reaching the plant during the dark period: a gap in a blackout curtain, an equipment status light, a door opened briefly.
Why it matters so much
Because a fraction of a second is enough to convert the pigment. The plant’s accumulated darkness is discarded and the timer restarts.
What the symptoms look like
A plant that will not start flowering, or one that starts and reverts, producing elongated growth and malformed flowers.
The other consequence
Stress, which in a line with residual sex plasticity can produce male flowers on a female plant and seed a whole crop.
Finding a leak
The method
Sit in the growing space with the lights off, in full darkness, for several minutes until the eyes adjust. Then look.
What becomes visible
Equipment indicator lights, gaps around doors, seams in blackout material, and light through ventilation ducting. All of it is invisible on a quick check.
Why the eye adaptation matters
Because the plant responds to intensities far below what an unadapted eye notices. Ten minutes of adaptation changes what a room looks like.
The fix
Tape, baffles, and covering every indicator. It is tedious, cheap, and it is the highest-value hour a grower can spend on a new space.
What happens at the switch
The first days
Nothing visible. The plant continues growing while the flowering signal propagates.
The stretch
A period of rapid extension, in which many varieties double in height. It is the largest and most frequently underestimated event in the cycle.
Why it catches growers out
Because the space was planned around the plant’s size at the switch rather than its size afterwards. Plants reach the lights and burn.
What determines its extent
The variety, principally. Some stretch modestly and others dramatically, and the difference is genetic.
The stages that follow
Flower initiation
The first structures appear at the branch tips and at the leaf axils. It confirms the switch took.
Bulk development
Structures expand and multiply over several weeks. This is where most of the eventual mass is built.
Ripening
Expansion slows and the resin glands mature. Composition shifts during this period, and it is what harvest timing is judging.
The total
Typically several weeks to a couple of months from switch to harvest, depending entirely on the variety.
Outdoors, where nothing is controlled
What sets the timing
The season. Nights lengthen after midsummer, cross the threshold, and the crop flowers on the calendar the latitude dictates.
What the grower controls
The planting date, the variety, and nothing else. The photoperiod is not negotiable.
The latitude constraint
A variety needing a long season will not finish before the weather ends the crop at a high latitude. Variety selection is therefore geographic.
The other risk
Autumn rain arriving while flowers are dense and maturing, which is the principal cause of outdoor crop loss in temperate climates.
Glasshouse and the middle position
What it offers
Natural light with the ability to modify the photoperiod, using blackout screens to lengthen the dark period or supplementary light to shorten it.
Why that is valuable
It decouples the crop from the calendar without the energy cost of growing entirely under lamps.
What it costs
Screens, motors and control systems, plus the labour of running them. It is a substantial capital item.
What it enables
Multiple crops per year in a climate that would otherwise allow one, which is the commercial argument for it.
Autoflowering as the alternative
What the trait is
Flowering triggered by the plant’s own developmental stage rather than by the photoperiod. It starts flowering after a period of growth, whatever the light schedule.
Where it came from
A subspecies adapted to very high latitudes, where the summer is short and the day length never falls enough to trigger a photoperiod response in time.
What it removes
The light leak problem, the blackout requirement, and the need to synchronise a room. It is a genuine simplification.
What it costs
Size, generally, and a fixed cycle length. The plant flowers on its own schedule and the grower cannot extend the vegetative period to build a larger frame.
What the autoflowering trait does not change
The light requirement
The plant still needs light to grow. Autoflowering plants are typically given long light periods throughout, because more light means more growth.
The energy cost indoors
Longer light periods mean higher electricity consumption per crop, which offsets part of the simplicity gain.
The genetics
It is a heritable trait like any other, and it is bred into lines rather than being a property of a growing method.
The other traits
Composition, aroma, structure and resilience are all independent of it. An autoflowering line is not otherwise different by construction.
Light spectrum, which is a separate question
What it affects
Growth morphology and, to a degree, the composition of what the plant produces. It is not what triggers flowering.
Why the two get confused
Because both are described as light, and because lamp marketing frequently conflates them.
What is established
Plants respond to spectral composition in documented ways, particularly to the red and far-red balance, which is the same pigment system that measures the dark period.
What is not
Most of the specific quality claims attached to particular lamp spectra. They range from well-supported to entirely promotional.
Intensity, which is another separate question
What it governs
Photosynthetic rate, and therefore growth. More light means more growth, up to the point where other factors become limiting.
Where the limit sits
Carbon dioxide availability, temperature, and water. Beyond a certain intensity, adding light adds nothing without addressing those.
What excessive light does
Bleaches the tissue nearest the lamp and reduces the material’s value. It is a common error in spaces where lamps were upgraded without raising them.
How it relates to flowering
Not at all, mechanistically. A plant under weak light and a long dark period flowers; one under intense light and a short dark period does not.
Reverting to vegetative growth
What it is
A flowering plant returning to vegetative growth when the dark period is shortened again.
When it happens deliberately
To keep a selected plant alive as a mother after assessing its flowers. It works and it takes weeks.
When it happens accidentally
Through a light leak or a timer failure mid-flower. The plant produces disordered growth from existing flowers and the crop is largely lost.
What it looks like
Elongated growth emerging from flower structures, with leaves appearing where they should not. It is unmistakable once seen.
What a buyer sees of any of this
Nothing directly
Photoperiod management is upstream of everything a buyer encounters, and no document records it.
What might be visible
Material from a crop that reverted or suffered light stress can show malformed structures and occasional seed. Both are visible.
What the certificate covers
Composition and contaminants on the finished material. The growing schedule appears nowhere.
The one inference available
Seeds in flower can indicate light stress on a line with residual plasticity. It is one possible cause among several.
Why the vocabulary is worth fixing
What the common term implies
That the plant counts daylight. Anyone reasoning from that premise will make the wrong decision about a light leak, because a brief flash does not meaningfully change a day length.
What the mechanism implies
That darkness is a resource being accumulated and that any light spends it. From that premise the correct behaviour follows immediately.
Why it matters more than it seems
Because most of the expensive mistakes in this area come from the first premise. The grower who understands the second one tapes over the indicator lights without being told.
The phrasing that works
Uninterrupted darkness. Two words, and they carry the whole mechanism.
Where the mechanism was worked out
The original experiments
Photoperiodism was described in the nineteen-twenties, in work on tobacco and soybean, when researchers noticed that certain lines would not flower under long days however well they were fed.
The interruption experiment
The decisive result came later: interrupting the dark period with a brief flash abolished the response, while interrupting the light period did nothing. That single asymmetry located the mechanism in the dark.
Why it generalises
The pigment system involved is present across flowering plants, and the same night-break behaviour is observed in many crops. This species is an ordinary case of a well-studied phenomenon.
What that means for confidence
This is one of the few areas in this subject where the underlying biology is settled, long established, and not in dispute anywhere.

Photoperiod
The pattern of light and dark a plant experiences, conventionally named for the light although the dark period is what is measured.

Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
How this connects to the rest
With feminised seed
Light stress is one of the triggers that can produce male flowers on a female plant, which is where seeds in a crop come from.
With canopy management
The stretch is what makes canopy planning necessary, and it is why the plan has to anticipate the post-switch size.
With harvest timing
The ripening period is what harvest timing judges. Its length is set by the variety.
With the certificate
Nothing about the growing schedule appears on it. It measures the finished material.
What this is for in practice
If you ever grow
Sit in the dark for ten minutes before the first cycle. It is the cheapest insurance available.
When reading about lamps
Spectrum and intensity are separate questions from flowering. Marketing routinely conflates all three.
When you see seeds in flower
Light stress is one possible cause. A missed male and an unstable line are the others.

The certificate and the per-milligram price. None of this appears on either.

Almost everything expensive that goes wrong in this area traces back to one misunderstanding: that the plant is counting daylight. It is not. It is accumulating darkness, and any light at all spends what has been accumulated.
Someone holding the first idea sees no reason to worry about a status light on a timer. Someone holding the second one covers it before the first cycle starts. The mechanism is well established and the vocabulary points the wrong way, which is why the misunderstanding survives.
