What calibre changes, and what it does not
One plant produces flowers of very different sizes. Exposed tops give the largest, shaded lower parts the smallest, and the price gap between the two categories commonly reaches a factor of two.
Part of that gap corresponds to real, measurable differences. Another part reflects an inherited market convention that rewards an aesthetic criterion with no demonstrated relationship to what the product contains.
This page describes what produces the size difference, what analyses show when the two categories are compared, what sorting costs and returns, and in which cases the price gap is genuinely justified.

The tops receive the most light and develop the largest inflorescences. The decrease is continuous going down toward the base.

Crop management
Spreading the canopy, opening branches and levelling heights reduces the gap. Neglected management widens it considerably.
Defoliation
Removing the leaves that shade lower levels redistributes light. It is a manual operation and costly in labour.
What analyses show
Cannabinoid content
Available comparisons between calibres from the same plant give small gaps, often below the measurement variability itself.
Terpene profile
It differs more, with totals generally lower on the lower parts. The gap is real and modest.
Gland density
It follows the light gradient: tops carry more per unit of surface. This is the best-established difference.
What that gives overall
A real analytical quality gap, clearly smaller than the price gap applied. The proportion does not hold.
The surface-to-volume ratio
The geometric principle
A small flower offers proportionally more surface for a given volume. It is a mathematical consequence of shape, not a biological property.
What this implies
The glands sit on the surface. At equal gland density per unit of surface, a small flower carries more of them relative to its mass.
The compensating effect
That geometric advantage partly offsets the light disadvantage. The two effects work in opposite directions.
The net result
It varies by case and is not systematically unfavourable to small calibres. That is what comparative analyses show.
What drying changes between calibres
The speed
Small flowers dry faster, because of their surface-to-volume ratio. They reach equilibrium before the large ones.
The over-drying risk
Treated with the same duration as the large ones, they end up too dry and shed their glands at the slightest contact.
The sanitary advantage
They present a considerably lower risk of internal fungal development, since moisture migrates out of them more easily.
What practice imposes
Sorting before drying would allow the duration to be matched to each calibre. Few producers do it, for want of time.

The operation
Separating calibres after drying, by hand or by calibrated screening. It is additional working time on every batch.
What it permits
Selling each category at its market price and presenting homogeneous batches. It is the most transparent practice.
What it costs
Several hours per batch on a small operation. On an industrial one, dedicated grading equipment.
The alternative
Selling everything under a single reference at an intermediate price. The buyer then receives a heterogeneous batch with nothing announcing it.
The commercial vocabulary
The terms used
Small buds, lower grade, second category, and a few English expressions that have passed into general use. None is defined.
The absence of a standard
There is no official grading reference. Each seller uses their own thresholds and their own words.
What this rules out
Any objective comparison between two offers presented as different calibres. The categories do not cover the same thing.
What remains comparable
Price per gram and price per milligram of the principal compound, supported by the batch certificate.
What the price gap covers
A justified share
Slightly lower gland density, a somewhat less rich aromatic profile, a less regular appearance. These are real differences.
A conventional share
The aesthetic of the finished product. A large well-formed inflorescence has a presentation value that corresponds to no measured property.
A share tied to sorting
The separation work has a real cost that falls on the higher category. It is legitimate and rarely made explicit.
The proportion
On a price gap of a factor of two, the technically justified share is a minority. The per-milligram calculation shows it.
The calculation that settles it
The method
Price divided by the total quantity of the principal compound, using the certificates for both categories where they exist.
What it frequently reveals
Small calibres offer a markedly more favourable ratio. This is the most common case and it is easy to verify.
The condition
Having a certificate for each category. Many sellers analyse only the higher category and extrapolate.
The question to ask
Whether the certificate supplied corresponds to the calibre ordered, or to another batch from the same production. The answer is instructive.
What the certificate covers
The content
Measured on the sample taken. If the batch mixes several calibres, the value is an average whose representativeness depends on the sampling.
Compliance
Total THC, calculated as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877. It does not depend on calibre.
Contaminants
Pesticides, heavy metals and microbiology. No reason for them to differ between calibres from the same plot.
What it does not say
Which calibre was analysed. That information is absent from the document, which makes the question to the seller necessary.
Uses for small calibres
Direct sale
They are sold as they are, at a lower price, to buyers who do the calculation.
Transformation
They frequently feed extractions and concentrates, where morphology is of no importance whatsoever.
Mixing
Some batches incorporate a proportion of small calibres without mentioning it. It is a common practice and difficult to detect.
What this creates
A two-speed market where the same material changes value according to its destination. The gap is commercial rather than analytical.
What transformation reveals
Indifference to shape
An extractor handles a large or a small calibre identically. Only composition counts.
The entry price
Transformers buy by weight and by content, with no morphology premium. It is the most rational market in the sector.
What this demonstrates
When appearance stops having value, the price gap between calibres almost entirely disappears. It is a confirmation by use.
The lesson for a buyer
Paying for morphology is a choice, not a necessity. The professional market does not make it.
Small calibres and handling
The fragility
Their surface-to-volume ratio exposes them more to friction. They lose proportionally more glands in transport.
The packaging
They pack down more in a container, which increases contacts and losses.
What this implies
More careful packaging partly compensates the disadvantage. A rigid container rather than a soft bag.
What the buyer can do
Decant on arrival and handle less. The same precautions as for everything else, with a little more attention.
The case of trim residues
What they are
Fragments detached during finishing: small bracts, pieces of flower, debris. They contain glands.
The distinction from small calibres
A small calibre is a whole inflorescence, simply smaller. A trim residue is a fragment. They are two different products.
The commercial confusion
Some batches sold as small calibres in fact contain a substantial proportion of fragments. The difference in value is real.
How to tell them apart
A whole inflorescence keeps an identifiable structure with a central axis. A fragment does not.
What batch homogeneity is worth
The criterion
A batch homogeneous in calibre indicates sorting was done. A very heterogeneous one indicates no sorting, or deliberate mixing.
What homogeneity provides
Predictability: each bag resembles the previous one. That is what lets a regular buyer know what they are ordering.
What it costs
The sorting work, passed on in the price. A homogeneous and cheap batch is a rare combination.
The direct question
Whether the batch was sorted by calibre. The answer says as much about the producer’s practice as about the product.
Common errors
Equating small with poor
The analytical gap is small and sometimes nil. The difference is principally aesthetic.
Ignoring the corresponding certificate
A report established on the higher category does not necessarily describe the batch of small calibres sold alongside it.
Confusing them with fragments
A whole small calibre and a trim residue have neither the same composition nor the same value.
Paying for aesthetics unknowingly
The per-milligram calculation makes the trade-off explicit. Without it the decision rests on an impression.
Where the vocabulary came from
A commercial borrowing
The expressions used for small calibres came from North American supply chains and were adopted in Europe as they stood. They have never been given a shared definition.
What the term suggests
A lower grade, an offcut, a second quality. The connotation sits inside the word before any analytical check, and it steers the judgement.
What the term actually denotes
A whole, complete inflorescence, simply from a less exposed part of the plant. Nothing in its constitution distinguishes it other than size.
What the vocabulary produces
A price gap built on a connotation. It is a fairly clear case where the choice of words precedes and determines commercial value.
Mechanical grading
The principle
Rotating drums perforated with calibrated holes, or stacked screens of decreasing mesh, separate inflorescences by size. It is standard industrial equipment.
What the operation costs the material
Every pass through a drum is friction. Glands detach and accumulate in the equipment, which represents a real loss on the sorted batch.
The trade-off
Fine sorting gives very homogeneous categories at the cost of several successive passes, and therefore several opportunities for loss. Coarse sorting preserves better and separates less well.
What the producer arbitrates
Commercial value gained through homogeneity against material lost in sorting. The trade-off is not obvious and depends heavily on the target selling price.
Hand sorting
The method
Separation by hand, inflorescence by inflorescence, generally at the time of trimming. It is the gentlest operation for the material and the most costly in labour.
The advantage
Almost no gland loss, and a simultaneous check on the appearance and sanitary state of each piece. The operator sets aside anything that poses a problem.
The cost
Several hours per kilogram. On any volume production the operation quickly becomes impractical without a large workforce.
Where it survives
On small, high-value productions where the selling price absorbs the cost of the work. It is a marker of positioning more than of intrinsic quality.
What homogeneity does for the analysis
The sampling
A batch homogeneous in calibre allows more representative sampling. The measured value better describes what the buyer receives.
On a mixed batch
The sample can over-represent one category. The gap between the certificate content and the bag content widens without anyone measuring it.
What the laboratory does
A laboratory accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 follows a defined sampling procedure. It does not correct the heterogeneity of the batch presented to it.
The consequence
A sorted batch offers not only a more regular presentation but a certificate whose representativeness is better. It is an argument rarely advanced and more solid than aesthetics.

Calibre
The size of an inflorescence, generally assessed visually. No official reference sets the thresholds.
Light gradient
The decrease in light intensity with depth into a canopy. It explains most of the calibre differences.
Surface-to-volume ratio

The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
How this connects to the rest
With density
Two distinct morphological criteria, both rewarded by the market with no solid analytical basis.
With drying
Small calibres dry faster and need a matched duration. A single protocol over-dries them.
With trimming
The distinction between a small calibre and a trim residue is made at that stage. It has real commercial value.
With price per milligram
It is the calculation that neutralises the aesthetic criterion and makes the two categories comparable.
What this is for in practice
To buy for less
Small calibres often offer a markedly better ratio, provided the corresponding certificate is available.
To check an offer
Ask whether the certificate covers the calibre ordered. It is the most useful question on this subject.
To spot a mixture
Distinguish whole inflorescences from fragments. The structure with a central axis is the criterion.
To decide knowingly
Paying for aesthetics is a legitimate choice. Doing so without knowing is not.

We check what can be checked from documents: official registers, declared contents, certificates of analysis, arithmetic. We test no products, rank nothing, and assert no effects.
This file has a rare property: it is directly verifiable by the market itself. Transformers, who buy on content without looking at shape, apply practically no price gap between calibres. That is the clearest demonstration that the gap observed at retail is largely aesthetic.
What remains usable is straightforward: ask for the certificate corresponding to the calibre ordered, do the per-milligram division, and decide afterwards. Paying more for a handsome flower is entirely legitimate, provided you know that is what you are doing.
