The narrow band where nothing goes wrong

cbdlovers editorial 17 min

A few percentage points separate two different problems. Above one threshold, microbiological growth becomes possible in a sealed container. Below another, the material turns brittle and sheds the glands that carry everything of value.

The band between them is narrow, and holding it is the whole of what humidity control means in this context. It is also the one storage variable that can be measured directly rather than inferred, which makes it unusually tractable.

This page covers what relative humidity means here, why water activity is the figure that actually governs risk, where the two thresholds sit and why, what control packs and instruments do, and how to read a container that has drifted.

⚠️ Scope. This page describes a process and what can be verified from documents. It does not describe what a product does to a person, gives no amounts, and does not replace a healthcare professional.

🔴 What is being measured

Relative humidity

The amount of water vapour in the air compared with the maximum that air could hold at the same temperature, expressed as a percentage. It is a property of the air, not of the material.

Why the air rather than the material

Because in a sealed container the two reach equilibrium. The headspace humidity is the readable proxy for the moisture state of what sits beneath it, once enough time has passed.

The equilibration delay

Headspace air equilibrates within hours. The interior of a dense flower takes considerably longer, which means a reading taken shortly after a change describes the surface rather than the whole.

What this implies for readings

A stable figure over several days means something. A figure taken an hour after decanting means very little, and the difference between the two is the commonest source of confusion here.

🔴 Water activity, the figure that matters

The definition

The availability of water for chemical and biological processes, on a scale from zero to one. It is not the same as total water content and it is the parameter that governs microbiological growth.

The relationship to relative humidity

In a sealed container at equilibrium, water activity equals the relative humidity of the headspace divided by one hundred. A reading of sixty per cent corresponds to a water activity of 0.60.

Why the distinction matters

Two materials with identical total water content can have different water activities, depending on how tightly that water is bound. Growth follows availability rather than quantity.

Where the threshold sits

Most moulds require a water activity above roughly 0.65 to establish. That figure, converted, is why the upper limit of the storage band sits where it does.

The upper threshold

What happens above it

Given time and a suitable temperature, microbiological growth becomes possible. It does not become certain — spores, temperature and time all matter — but the barrier has been removed.

Why sealed containers are worse, not better

A sealed container holds the moisture in. Material at high humidity in open air loses it; the same material in a closed jar sits at that level indefinitely.

The temperature interaction

Warmer conditions raise both the growth rate and the amount of water the air can hold. A container that is marginal at fifteen degrees is less marginal at twenty-five.

What the regulatory framework says

Microbiological criteria for foodstuffs are established at Union level. Analysis against them is what produces a result; a hygrometer reading produces an indication.

The lower threshold

What happens below it

The material becomes brittle. The trichome stalks lose flexibility and shear off at any handling, and the loss is physical and permanent.

Why this is not a safety question

Dry material is stable and safe. What it loses is quality, and it loses it in a way that transfers the glands to the container wall rather than destroying them.

The visible sign

Dust and loose material at the bottom of a container, and flower that crumbles rather than yields under gentle pressure.

The asymmetry worth remembering

Too dry costs quality; too damp creates risk. Where the band cannot be held precisely, erring on the dry side is the safer failure.

The band in practice

The figures in use

The range around fifty-eight to sixty-two per cent relative humidity is what the industry converged on, and control packs are manufactured to sit within it.

Why not a single value

Because materials vary in density and in how tightly they hold water. A band accommodates that variation; a point value would be false precision.

What sits outside it deliberately

Material intended for extraction is often held drier, because the handling properties do not matter and stability does. The band is for material sold as flower.

The margin either side

A few points above or below the band is not an emergency in either direction. Sustained excursions are what matter, not momentary readings.

Two-way control packs

The mechanism

A sealed membrane containing a saturated salt solution. The solution has a fixed equilibrium humidity, and the membrane allows water vapour to pass in either direction until the container matches it.

What two-way means

Unlike a desiccant, which only absorbs, these release moisture when the container is drier than the set point. That is what makes them suitable here rather than merely drying.

Sizing them

Packs are sold by weight for a given quantity of material. An undersized pack exhausts its capacity and stops holding the level.

Their working life

Finite. A pack that has become hard has given up its water and is no longer regulating; one that feels saturated has absorbed all it can.

Hygrometers and their limits

What they read

The relative humidity of the headspace, which is the correct thing to read. The question is whether they read it accurately.

The drift problem

Inexpensive digital units drift over time, and an error of five points sits on the wrong side of the threshold that matters. Drift is silent and the display looks equally confident.

The salt test

A saturated salt solution in a sealed container holds a known humidity. Placing a hygrometer above it for several hours gives a reference point against which to correct the reading.

What a reading is genuinely useful for

Confirming that a container seals and that a pack is working. Both are yes-or-no questions where a five-point error does not change the answer.

Reading a container that has drifted high

The likely causes

A pack past its life, a container that stopped sealing, material that arrived damp, or a temperature change driving condensation.

The first check

Whether the container is actually sealing. An unsealed container drifts toward room humidity, which in most homes is below the band rather than above it.

The action

Open, inspect by smell and sight, and reduce the humidity gradually with a fresh pack rather than by leaving it open to dry.

What not to do

Nothing sudden. Rapid drying stresses the material and drives moisture out unevenly, and a sharp correction is worse than a gradual one.

Reading a container that has drifted low

The likely causes

An exhausted pack, no pack at all, or a container in a dry heated room over winter. This is the commoner direction in most homes.

What has already happened

Some gland loss, proportional to how far below the band and for how long. This is not recoverable.

The correction

A fresh two-way pack in a sealed container, over several days. The material regains flexibility and stops shedding.

What the correction does not restore

Aroma. The volatile compounds left while the material was drying out, and rehydration returns handling properties only.

Temperature and humidity together

Why they cannot be separated

Relative humidity is defined relative to temperature. The same absolute quantity of water vapour reads as a different percentage at different temperatures.

What this means for a cupboard

A container moved from a cool room to a warm one shows a lower reading without any water having left. The material has not changed; the denominator has.

The condensation risk

Cooling a sealed container can take the headspace below its dew point, depositing liquid water on the interior surfaces. This is the mechanism behind the refrigerator problem.

The practical rule

Stability matters more than the absolute temperature. A steady eighteen degrees is better than a range between eight and twenty-two.

Container size and humidity

The interaction

A small quantity in a large container has a large headspace, which takes longer to equilibrate and buffers changes less predictably.

The pack sizing consequence

Pack capacity is specified against material weight, but the headspace volume also draws on it. An oversized container effectively undersizes the pack.

What good practice looks like

Container sized to the contents, pack sized to the material, and both revisited as the quantity falls.

The simplest version

Decant into a smaller jar and move the pack across. Two actions, taking a minute, that keep the arrangement proportionate.

What arrives from a seller

The state on delivery

Unknown. Transport conditions are uncontrolled and the packaging is rarely designed to hold a humidity level.

The first reading

Taken after the material has been in a sealed container for a day. Anything earlier reads the transition rather than the state.

What a low reading on arrival indicates

Either dry material or a long time in permeable packaging. The two are indistinguishable from the reading alone.

What a high reading indicates

A more serious observation, and one worth acting on quickly. Inspect before doing anything else.

The relationship to drying and curing

Where the band comes from

It is the same range that a controlled drying process targets at its endpoint, and the same range a curing period maintains.

Why it persists after purchase

Because the reasons are the same. The material is stable there, safe there, and handles well there, and none of that changes when it moves from a producer’s jar to a buyer’s.

What a producer already did

Held the material in that band for weeks. Storage after purchase is the continuation of that process rather than a separate discipline.

What a badly dried product brings

Uneven internal moisture that a hygrometer cannot see. The headspace can read correctly while the interior of a dense flower has not equilibrated.

What measurement cannot settle

The interior of dense material

Headspace readings describe the surroundings. A dense flower with a damper core reads as compliant until the core equilibrates, which can take a long time.

Whether growth has started

Only analysis establishes that. A reading in the band means the conditions are unfavourable, not that nothing is present.

Whether the material is good

Humidity is one variable of several. Material at exactly the right humidity can be old, badly dried, or poorly grown.

What it does settle

Whether the container is holding conditions that make the situation worse over time. That is a real question and a hygrometer answers it.

The salt test in detail

Why it works

A saturated salt solution holds the air above it at a fixed relative humidity, determined by the salt and largely independent of temperature over ordinary ranges. That gives a reference point without any calibration equipment.

The salt in common use

Ordinary table salt, saturated, produces an equilibrium humidity of about seventy-five per cent. It is above the storage band, which is fine: the point is to establish the instrument’s error, not to reproduce storage conditions.

The procedure

A small quantity of salt, dampened until it is a slurry rather than a solution, in a sealed container with the hygrometer above it. Left for six to eight hours at a stable temperature.

Reading the result

The difference between the display and the reference value is the instrument’s error at that point. Some units allow calibration; on those that do not, the correction is applied mentally.

What a drift over months looks like

The pattern

A container that read correctly in autumn reads several points lower by February, in a heated home with dry indoor air. Nothing has failed; the pack has been working against a larger gradient and has exhausted sooner.

The seasonal correction

Packs last less time in winter in heated buildings, and less time in dry climates generally. Replacement intervals quoted on packaging assume moderate conditions.

What the material shows

Increasing dust in the container and flower that crumbles rather than yields. Both appear gradually enough that they are usually noticed only in comparison with a fresh purchase.

The habit that catches it

Feeling the pack when the container is opened. A hardened pack has finished, and that is a two-second check with no instrument involved.

Multiple containers, one climate

The situation

Several jars in the same cupboard, each with its own pack, in a room with its own humidity. The containers are independent as long as they seal.

Where they interact

They do not, if sealed. Where they appear to, the sealing is the thing to check rather than the arrangement.

The shared failure mode

A cupboard on an external wall, or one that gets warm in the afternoon, affects every container in it simultaneously through the temperature route rather than the humidity one.

The practical arrangement

One pack per container, sized to its contents, and a cupboard chosen for temperature stability rather than convenience.

What to do with a reading you distrust

The first question

Is the instrument calibrated. An uncalibrated hygrometer is the likeliest explanation for a reading that does not match what the material feels like.

The second

Has the container been stable long enough. A reading taken within hours of decanting describes a transition rather than a state.

The third

Does the material agree. Touch is a genuine cross-check: brittle material at a reading of sixty-two per cent means the instrument, not the material, is wrong.

The resolution

Where the instrument and the material disagree, the material is right. It is the thing being stored, and the reading is only a proxy for its condition.

Why the band is not a standard

What exists

No published standard fixes a storage humidity for this material. The range in general use emerged from practice and from the specifications of the control packs manufactured for it.

How it became conventional

Producers converged on it because it is where material handles well and where the microbiological margin is comfortable. Pack manufacturers then built to that range, and the two reinforced each other.

What this means for a buyer

The figures are sound and they are not opposable. A seller who states a storage humidity is describing their practice rather than complying with a requirement.

Where a real standard does apply

To the microbiological outcome rather than the storage condition. Criteria for foodstuffs are established at Union level, and they concern what is present rather than the conditions it was held in.

A short glossary

Relative humidity

The water vapour in air as a percentage of the maximum that air could hold at the same temperature.

Water activity

The availability of water for chemical and biological processes, on a scale of zero to one. It governs microbiological growth.

Two-way humidity pack

A membrane-sealed saturated salt solution that absorbs and releases moisture to hold a container at a set humidity.

Equilibration

The process by which the material and the surrounding air reach a common moisture state. Air reaches it in hours, dense material in days.

Dew point

The temperature at which water condenses out of air. Cooling a sealed container below it deposits liquid water inside.

The five checks that apply to any product

The batch certificate

Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.

Total THC

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.

Price per milligram

A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.

The claims

Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.

The seller’s details

Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

How this connects to the rest

With storage generally

It is the one storage variable that can be read from an instrument rather than inferred from appearance.

With the refrigerator problem

The dew point mechanism is why cooling a sealed container repeatedly causes the damage it does.

With curing

The band is the same one a producer holds during the curing period. Storage continues that arrangement.

With microbiological analysis

A reading indicates conditions. Only an accredited analysis against established criteria produces a result.

What this is for in practice

Setting up

A sealed opaque container, a correctly sized two-way pack, and a hygrometer if you want confirmation.

Reading it

After a day of stability, not immediately after a change. A single early reading describes a transition.

Correcting a drift

Gradually, in either direction. Sharp corrections stress the material and distribute moisture unevenly.

Deciding what matters

Sustained excursions, not momentary readings. A few points either way for a day is not an event.

Frequently asked questions

What humidity should I store at? The band around fifty-eight to sixty-two per cent relative humidity, which is what control packs are manufactured to hold.

What happens above the band? Microbiological growth becomes possible in a sealed container. It does not become certain, but the barrier is removed.

What happens below it? The material turns brittle and sheds glands under handling. This is a quality loss rather than a hazard.

What is water activity? The availability of water for biological processes. In a sealed container at equilibrium it equals the headspace humidity divided by one hundred.

Do two-way packs work? Yes, within their capacity and working life. A hardened pack has given up its water and no longer regulates.

Are cheap hygrometers reliable? They drift, silently. A salt test against a known reference establishes the correction and takes a few hours.

How long before a reading is meaningful? A day of stability at minimum. Headspace air equilibrates in hours; dense material takes considerably longer.

Why does the reading change when I move the container? Relative humidity is defined against temperature. A warmer room gives a lower reading with the same water present.

Can I dry damp material by leaving it open? Not advisably. Rapid drying stresses the material and moves moisture unevenly. A gradual correction with a pack is better.

Does a reading in the band mean it is safe? It means conditions are unfavourable to growth. Only an analysis against established criteria produces a result.

What we check and what we do not

We check what can be checked from documents: official registers, declared contents, certificates of analysis, arithmetic. We test no products, rank nothing, and assert no effects.

This is the only storage variable with a number attached, and that makes it unusually satisfying to manage. It is also the variable where a cheap instrument creates false confidence, because a drifted hygrometer displays a wrong figure with exactly the same authority as a correct one.

The useful posture is therefore modest. Hold the container in the band, err dry rather than damp when the band cannot be held, and remember that a reading describes the air rather than the interior of what sits beneath it.
