What smell can judge, and what it cannot

Smell is the only instrument a buyer has that a laboratory does not routinely use. It detects freshness, storage failures and the early stage of microbiological problems — none of which appears on a standard certificate.

It also establishes nothing about content, compliance, pesticides or heavy metals. Those are exactly what the certificate covers, and no amount of practice will make a nose reach them.

This page covers what smell genuinely detects, how to make the observation reliable, what a trained nose actually is, where perception fails, and how the two halves of an assessment divide.

🔴 What smell detects that documents do not

Freshness

The aromatic profile declines over months, and the decline is perceptible well before anything else changes. No certificate records the material’s age directly.

Storage failure

Material kept warm, in light, or in a poorly sealed container smells thinner and flatter than the same material kept properly.

Microbiological development

A stuffy, cellar-like or musty note is the earliest available warning, and it appears before anything is visible.

Handling

Material worked warm or handled excessively smells different from material treated gently. It is a process record.

What it cannot detect

Content

There is no relationship between how strongly something smells and how much of any compound it contains. The two are independent.

Compliance

Total THC, calculated as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, is not perceptible in any respect.

Pesticides

Residues at the concentrations that matter are below any olfactory threshold. Nothing about smell addresses them.

Heavy metals

Equally undetectable. Both are on the certificate for exactly this reason.

The compounds involved

What carries aroma

Volatile organic compounds, present in small quantities, evaporating readily at ambient temperature. That volatility is why they can be smelled and why they are lost.

How many

Dozens contribute perceptibly, in combinations that vary between varieties and between batches of one variety.

Where they sit

Concentrated in the resin glands, alongside the compounds a certificate measures. They leave the material continuously.

Why they are rarely measured

A terpene profile is a separate commission at additional cost, and there is no obligation to run one. Most certificates do not include it.

Making the observation reliable

Temperature

Bring material to room temperature first. Cold material releases far less, and a comparison between a cold sample and a warm one measures the temperature.

Time

Give it a minute after opening. The first breath from a sealed container is the accumulated headspace rather than the material.

The environment

A neutral space. Coffee, cooking, cleaning products and perfume all interfere, and the interference is not always noticed.

Your own state

Congestion, a recent strong smell, and smoking all reduce sensitivity substantially. It is worth noticing before drawing conclusions.

Adaptation

What it is

The nose stops registering a continuous smell within seconds. It is a normal property of the sense and it is not a defect.

What it means practically

A prolonged sniff tells you less than a brief one. The first impression is the informative one.

How to work around it

Short sniffs, spaced out, with breaks. Smelling something neutral between samples helps and is not a complete reset.

The consequence for comparisons

Comparing four samples in a row gives four progressively less reliable readings. Two is a realistic maximum.

Not increased sensitivity

The detection threshold is largely fixed. Practice does not make a nose more sensitive in any meaningful sense.

Vocabulary

Having words for what is perceived. Without them the impression cannot be held, compared or communicated.

Memory

Building a set of references against which new samples are placed. This is what distinguishes an experienced assessor.

Attention

Noticing what is present rather than confirming what was expected. It is the hardest part and the most valuable.

Building the vocabulary

Start from the familiar

Citrus, pine, pepper, earth, fuel, sweetness. Ordinary words for ordinary categories, and they are enough to begin.

Write it down

An impression not recorded is gone. A note of three words per purchase builds a usable reference set within months.

Compare against known things

Smelling a lemon, a pine branch and black pepper deliberately establishes references the memory can hold.

What not to do

Adopt elaborate tasting vocabulary before the basic categories are secure. Precision in words is not precision in perception.

The influence of expectation

What it does

Knowing what something is supposed to smell like makes it more likely you will find that. It is not a weakness peculiar to anyone.

Why it is unavoidable

Perception is constructive. The brain uses expectation to interpret ambiguous input, and aroma is ambiguous input.

How professionals handle it

Blind assessment: samples coded, order randomised, identity revealed afterwards. It is the only reliable correction.

What a buyer can do

Compare without looking at the labels, and record the impression before checking which was which. It takes a moment.

🔴 The one smell that matters most

What to watch for

A stuffy, musty, cellar-like or ammonia-like note, particularly one that was not there before.

What it indicates

Microbiological development, generally from moisture. It is the earliest available signal and it precedes anything visible.

What to do

Stop, and raise it with the seller with the batch code and photographs. Do not attempt to dry it out or salvage it.

Why this is the exception

Everything else on this page concerns quality. This one concerns safety, and the threshold for acting is a suspicion rather than a certainty.

Aroma and time

The decline

Volatile compounds leave continuously. The profile thins over months even in good storage, and much faster in poor storage.

What goes first

The lighter, brighter notes. What remains is the heavier fraction, which is why aged material smells flatter rather than merely weaker.

What it does not indicate

A change in content. The cannabinoid figures on a certificate remain broadly valid while the aroma declines noticeably.

The reference

A sealed sample set aside at purchase. It is the only way to judge the decline rather than remember it.

Where a certificate could help and usually does not

The terpene profile

A quantified measurement of the aromatic composition. It exists, it is straightforward, and it is rarely commissioned.

What it would settle

Whether a product actually carries the profile claimed for it, and how it compares to another objectively.

Why it is absent

Cost, and the absence of any obligation or commercial demand. It is the panel most worth asking for and least often provided.

What to do about it

Ask. Demand is what moved contaminant panels from optional to expected, and the same mechanism applies here.

Retronasal against orthonasal

The two routes

Smelling through the nostrils, and perceiving aroma at the back of the throat while something is in the mouth. They use the same receptors and produce different impressions.

Why the distinction matters

Much of what people describe as flavour is aroma arriving by the second route. It is why a blocked nose removes flavour as well as smell.

What that means for assessment

An impression formed by smelling and one formed while consuming are not the same measurement, and they do not always agree.

The practical consequence

Compare like with like. Two products assessed by different routes have not been compared at all.

Why individual perception varies

Genetic differences

People differ in their olfactory receptor genes, and specific compounds are perceived very differently or not at all by different individuals.

The documented cases

Several compounds in common foods produce a strong reaction in some people and none in others, for straightforward genetic reasons.

What that means here

Two people can honestly describe the same material in incompatible terms, and neither is mistaken.

The consequence for reviews

An aroma description is a report from one nose. It is informative about that person’s perception and it does not generalise.

The container and what it holds

The headspace

The air above the material accumulates volatile compounds while sealed. Opening releases that accumulation, which is not the same as the material’s ongoing smell.

Why the first breath misleads

It is concentrated headspace rather than the material itself. A minute of settling gives a more representative impression.

What the container contributes

Plastic holds and releases odours; some materials impart their own. Glass and metal are neutral and the difference is perceptible.

What a poorly sealed container shows

A thin, flat aroma from material that would otherwise be fine. It is a storage failure rather than a product one.

The vocabulary that circulates

The descriptors in use

A large and growing set of aroma terms, borrowed partly from wine and coffee and partly invented.

What they are worth

Within one person’s practice, a great deal: they are the labels that make memory usable. Across people, considerably less.

Why they transfer poorly

No shared reference standards, no calibration, and genuine differences in individual perception. There is nothing anchoring the terms.

What would anchor them

Reference compounds and a defined vocabulary, as wine and coffee developed over decades. Nothing equivalent exists here yet.

A method that actually works

Two samples, not four

Adaptation makes the third and fourth readings progressively unreliable. Restricting a session to two is the single largest improvement available.

Both at room temperature

Equilibrated for several minutes, in the same room, in the same kind of container. Otherwise the comparison measures the conditions.

Labels covered

Record the impression for each before revealing which is which. It costs nothing and it removes the largest source of error.

Three words each

Written down, with the date. The record is what turns a series of impressions into a reference set over time.

What a year of this produces

A usable memory

Enough reference points that a new sample can be placed rather than merely described. That placement is what expertise consists of.

Recognition of your own patterns

Which descriptors you use consistently, which conditions affect your readings, and which sellers’ material you actually prefer.

An independent view

The ability to disagree with a description on a product page from a basis rather than a hunch.

What it does not produce

Any ability to assess content, compliance or contamination. Those remain exactly where they were, which is on the certificate.

The asymmetry worth remembering

Documents are precise about few things

A certificate measures composition and contamination, accurately, on one sample at one moment. Outside those columns it is silent.

Senses are approximate about many

The nose reports on freshness, storage, handling and safety — four things no routine document covers — and it reports on all of them imprecisely.

Why that combination works

The two are strongest exactly where the other is weakest. Neither is a substitute and together they leave very little unexamined.

The five checks that apply to any product

The batch certificate

Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.

Total THC

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.

Price per milligram

A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.

The claims

Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.

The seller’s details

Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

How this connects to the rest

With storage

Aroma decline is the earliest perceptible consequence of poor storage, and the reason the container matters.

With the certificate

The division is clean: the nose covers what documents ignore, and documents cover what the nose cannot reach.

With microbiological safety

Smell is the earliest available warning, and it precedes anything visible.

With terpene profiles

The measurement that would make aroma comparable, and the one least often commissioned.

What this is for in practice

Before judging anything

Room temperature, a minute after opening, a neutral space, and a brief sniff rather than a long one.

When something smells stuffy

Stop. That is the one observation with a safety dimension and the threshold is a suspicion.

We check what can be checked from documents: official registers, declared contents, certificates of analysis, arithmetic. We test no products, rank nothing, and assert no effects.

The useful way to think about this is as a division of labour. A certificate measures composition and contamination, at one moment, on a sample. It says nothing about whether material was stored well, handled gently, or is still fresh — and those are precisely what a nose reports on.

Neither half substitutes for the other, and the failure mode runs in both directions. Trusting a document about freshness is as mistaken as trusting a nose about pesticides. Used for what each is good at, the two together cover almost everything a buyer can know.
