It is not abrupt. A head passes gradually from one state to the next, and the whole population does not progress at the same rate.

One does not observe a head but a population. It is the distribution across the three states that constitutes the signal.

A majority clear

The plant is still working. Harvesting at this point leaves potential unrealised and yields less.

A majority cloudy

Degradation is progressing. A few amber heads are normal; a majority indicates a late harvest.

It samples a population

Observing a few dozen heads on a plant carrying hundreds of thousands is estimation, not measurement.

It depends on the observer

Two growers looking at the same plant do not report the same proportion. The gap between personal estimates is real and documented by field experience.

It depends on the lighting

Perception of cloudiness varies with the light used. A warm source and a cold source do not give the same impression.

It quantifies nothing

A visual proportion converts to no measurable value. It does not transmit and it cannot be verified.

What the date determines

The quantity produced

It continues rising to a plateau. Harvesting before that plateau reduces yield without compensation.

The composition

The ratio between acid and neutral forms shifts. A late harvest mechanically shows more degraded forms.

The aromatic profile

Volatile compounds reach a maximum and then decline. The optimum point does not coincide with that of the cannabinoids.

Compliance

Total THC, calculated as delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, continues evolving until the cut. A late harvest moves closer to the regulatory threshold.

Observing the leaves

Trichomes on large leaves progress differently from those on the bracts. Observation must be on the bracts enveloping the flowers.

Observing a single point

An exposed top does not represent the whole plant. A decision based on one point leads to a premature harvest of the lower parts.

Confusing clear and cloudy

The most frequent error among beginners. Unsuitable lighting alone is enough to cause it.

Waiting for amber

Some guides recommend a high amber proportion. It corresponds to advanced degradation and the criterion is contested.

Heterogeneous batches

The origin of the problem

Not all plants in a plot progress at the same rate, even with identical genetics. Differences in exposure and vigour are enough to create a lag.

Staggered harvest

Some growers cut in several passes, starting with the most advanced tops. It costs more in labour.

Single harvest

More economical, it produces a batch in which different states coexist. This is the most frequent case.

What the buyer sees of it

A batch whose homogeneity varies. This explains part of the difference perceived between two bags of the same reference.

What the certificate does not record

The harvest date

It appears on no certificate of analysis and in no mandatory labelling particular. It is information the producer alone holds.

The observed proportion

No document indicates the state of the glands at the cut. The criterion that decided everything disappears entirely from the documentary chain.

The ratio between acid and neutral forms gives a partial indication. The CBN row gives another, blurred by storage time.

Why the eye persists

Observe directly

A loupe at thirty times allows the state of the glands on a purchased product to be seen. It is instructive and costs almost nothing.

What the observation teaches

A majority of intact cloudy heads indicates careful handling and a reasonable harvest. Many broken heads indicate the opposite.

What it does not teach

The exact harvest date, the batch content or its compliance. Those are separate dimensions.

The temporal limit

The state observed at purchase results from harvest, drying, transport and storage combined. The contribution of each can no longer be isolated.

Its origin

The visual criterion established itself in North American amateur growing circles from the nineteen-seventies onward, for want of access to any form of analysis. It spread afterwards without ever being validated by a comparative study.

What that persistence indicates

A criterion surviving the professionalisation of a sector is generally sufficient for the decision it serves. That does not make it precise; it makes it useful.

What statistics would say

A sample of that size against a population of that order gives a very wide confidence interval. The estimated proportion can diverge appreciably from the true value.

Why it still works

The decision does not require precision to the percentage point. Distinguishing a majority of clear from a majority of cloudy is a coarse judgement, and the sample suffices for it.

The limit that matters

Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
