What genetic testing could show
The technology
Genetic characterisation of plant material is routine and inexpensive. Establishing relatedness between lines is a solved technical problem.
Why it is not used
No commercial demand, no regulatory requirement, and a result that would frequently embarrass the naming currently in use.
What it would establish
Which lines are actually related to which. That is the question names purport to answer and cannot.
The realistic assessment
It will not happen commercially until identity carries enough value to fund it. That is the same condition that changed naming in other crops.
