Four quantities that move in opposite directions
Between the cut and the bag, somebody removes leaves. The operation looks trivial and purely cosmetic. It is in fact a trade-off between four quantities that all move in opposite directions.
Remove a lot and the product is clean, the taste cleaner, but saleable mass goes and glands detach. Remove little and the weight and the glands stay, but plant material of no interest remains and the appearance suffers.

The structures enveloping the flowers. They carry the highest gland density and are never removed.
The stems
The central axis and the branches. They constitute mass of no interest that inflates the weight if left in.

Leaving them keeps glands and gives a leafier appearance. Removing them gives a clean appearance and sacrifices part of the material.

What the producer decides
Where to set the line, generally according to the commercial positioning of the batch. There is no rule.
Wet trimming
The timing
Immediately after the cut, before drying. The material is supple and the leaves come away easily.
The advantages
The operation is faster, drying is accelerated and more even, and the visual result is clean.
The drawbacks
The material is fragile and sticky. Glands detach easily and remain on tools and hands.
What it produces
A flower that retracts during drying, sometimes revealing leaf tips that had been cut flush.
Dry trimming
The timing
After drying, once the material has stabilised. The leaves are brittle and come away with a gesture.
The advantages
The leaves protected the flowers during a drying that was slower and gentler. The final result is more precise, the flower having taken its definitive shape.
The drawbacks
The operation is slower, messier, and dry glands detach at the slightest contact.
What it produces
A cleaner finish and better drying, at the cost of more working time.

The mechanism
Every contact with the material detaches trichome heads. Trimming is, by nature, a succession of contacts.
Where they go
Onto tool blades, onto gloves, onto work surfaces, and into the air. Part is recovered and part is not.
What is recovered
Organised workshops collect residues from tools and surfaces. That concentrated fraction has real commercial value.
What this means
Trimming transfers material rather than destroying it. It is simply no longer on the flower being sold.
What trimming changes about taste
The plant material
Leaves and stems contain more chlorophyll and more of the compounds that give green and sometimes bitter notes.
The perceptible effect
A poorly trimmed flower has a more vegetal taste and a less clean burn. The difference is clear.
The ash content
Material heavy with leaves leaves more residue. It is an indicator used in other plant sectors.
The limit of the argument
On a slightly leafy flower the difference stays modest. It becomes clear on a frankly poorly trimmed product.
The weight sold
The producer’s calculation
Every gram of leaf removed is a gram that will not be sold. Across a whole batch the loss is substantial.
The temptation
Leaving more plant material mechanically increases the weight. It is a practice hard to characterise other than by its result.
What the buyer pays for
The price per gram applies to everything, leaves included. A leafy flower therefore costs more per gram of useful material.
The calculation that corrects it
Price per milligram of the principal compound, supported by the certificate. It neutralises the question entirely.
Trimming and drying
The effect on speed
Leaves left in place slow evaporation. A wet-trimmed batch dries appreciably faster.
The effect on evenness
The slowing from dry trimming favours a more complete internal migration of moisture. The result is more regular.
The risk
Slowed drying on a dense inflorescence lengthens the period during which fungal development remains possible.
The full trade-off
Speed and safety on one side, drying quality on the other. The choice depends on conditions and on morphology.
What trimming is not
A quality control
An impeccable trim says nothing about the cleanliness of the batch, its compliance or its content. These are independent dimensions.
A sanitary guarantee
Contamination inside an inflorescence survives any finish. Trimming reaches only the surface.
An indicator of content
No relationship. Content appears on the certificate and cannot be deduced from any finishing observation.
What it actually is
A finishing operation affecting appearance, taste and weight. Three real dimensions and nothing more.
Trim residues
What they contain
Sugar leaves loaded with glands, bract fragments, trichome dust. The content is lower than that of the flower and far from nil.
Their destination
Extraction, concentrates, various preparations. They feed a real and documented secondary supply chain.
Their value
It depends on their composition, measurable by analysis like any other raw material.
What to know about them
A batch sold as flower should not contain them. The distinction between inflorescence and fragment is commercial as much as physical.
What appearance reveals
A tight finish
Clean outlines, few visible leaf tips, the flower structure clearly legible. It is the result of precise work.
A loose finish
Sugar leaves left in place, a bushier appearance. It is not necessarily a defect and it retains glands.
A careless finish
Large leaves remaining, pieces of stem, an irregular appearance from flower to flower. That is characterised lack of care.
What regularity indicates
The uniformity of finish across a whole batch is more informative than a single piece. It attests to a controlled process.
The link with price
The cost of the work
Hand trimming represents several hours per kilogram. On an artisanal production it is the principal labour cost after cultivation.
What the market rewards
A clean finish sells for more. The premium is real and corresponds in part to actual work.
What it does not cover
No analytical superiority. The difference is aesthetic and gustatory, which has value but not the one sometimes attributed to it.
The reference calculation
Price per milligram of the principal compound. It puts different finishes on a comparable basis.

Spring scissors
The basic tool of hand trimming. Their geometry and sharpness determine the precision and the operator fatigue.
Fouling
Resins accumulate on the blades and impede cutting. Frequent cleaning is essential and recovers material worth keeping.
Gloves
They stop glands depositing on skin and allow what adheres to be recovered. It is standard workshop practice.
Work surfaces
A smooth tray allows what falls to be collected. An irregular work surface disperses the material with no way of recovering it.
The ergonomics of the operation
The duration
Several consecutive hours for an operator, with a static posture and a repetitive gesture.
The consequences
Musculoskeletal disorders of the wrist and shoulder, documented in sectors where the operation is intensive.
The organisation
Task rotation, regular breaks, workstation adjustment. These are genuine working-conditions questions.
What this explains
Mechanisation does not only answer a cost imperative. It also answers a physical difficulty of the manual work.
What the certificate does not say
The finish
No row on an analytical report describes trimming. The document measures a composition, not a presentation.
The proportion of plant material
Nor does it appear. A leafy flower and a clean one can give comparable certificates.
What varies indirectly
The measured content can fall slightly if the proportion of gland-free plant material rises. The effect is modest.
The conclusion
As with drying and curing, the stage is documented nowhere. Only observation at purchase informs.
Levels of finish in practice
Minimal finish
Large leaves and stems removed, sugar leaves entirely retained. It is the fastest level, used on batches destined for transformation or sold at low prices.
Standard finish
Large leaves removed, sugar leaves shortened but visible. This is the most widespread compromise on the European market and it corresponds to a reasonable working time.
Tight finish
Sugar leaves cut flush with the bract, clean outlines, the flower structure entirely exposed. It demands two to three times the time of a standard finish.
What each level costs
Working time rises far faster than perceived quality. Moving from standard to tight doubles the labour cost for a visual gain not every buyer perceives.
The trim yield
What the term denotes
The proportion of mass retained after the operation, relative to the mass before. It is measured and it is an indicator that organised producers track.
The orders of magnitude
They vary considerably with variety, level of finish and timing. A difference of several points between two batches from the same operation is ordinary.
What tracking permits
Comparing operators, varieties and methods on an objective basis. It is one of the few numerical indicators of this stage.
What it does not say
Anything about the quality of the gesture. A high yield can mean a finish that is too loose as much as precise work that wastes nothing.
What the variety imposes
Dense morphologies
Sugar leaves are partly enclosed within the structure. Some are inaccessible without dismantling the inflorescence, and they emerge after drying.
Airy morphologies
The leaves are well exposed and accessible. Trimming is faster and the result cleaner, without additional effort from the operator.
The number of sugar leaves
It varies considerably between varieties. Some lines produce very few, which is a real economic advantage for the producer.
What this changes about judgement
A finish that looks approximate can result from a difficult morphology rather than from carelessness. The distinction requires knowing the variety.
The seasonal organisation
The bottleneck
A whole harvest has to be finished within a limited window, failing which the material waits in conditions that degrade it. It is the heaviest logistical constraint of an operation.
Seasonal labour
Outdoor productions employ temporary teams over a few weeks. Operator training is short and the quality of the gesture varies considerably between them.
The effect on homogeneity
A batch finished by a heterogeneous team shows uneven finishes. It is visible when the bag is opened and it is not necessarily the sign of a poor producer.
What continuous production avoids
Cultivation under artificial light harvests in staggered cycles, which spreads the work across the year. The regularity of finish is markedly better.

The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.

The choice of when to trim determines drying speed. The two operations are not considered separately.
With trichomes
Every contact detaches some. Trimming is a succession of contacts, and that is its principal cost.

This operation is the most visible in the whole chain and one of the least understood. What a buyer takes for simple cosmetic care is in fact a trade-off between four contradictory quantities, three of which cost them or earn them money directly.
What remains observable is the regularity of the finish across a whole batch, which attests to a controlled process, and the distinction between a whole inflorescence and a fragment. Two observations requiring nothing but an attentive look.
