What does the carrying, and why it matters
Almost everything in the bottle is the carrier. The active fraction is a small percentage by volume, and the oil surrounding it determines the taste, the texture, how long the product keeps and whether it is suitable for someone with an allergy.
It is also the first entry on the ingredient list, which is a good indication of how much of the product it constitutes. Despite that it is rarely the thing anyone compares.
This page covers what each common carrier is, what differs between them, which differences are established and which are marketing, and what the label should tell you.

The solubility problem
The compound dissolves readily in fats and poorly in water. A fat-based carrier is a structural requirement rather than a formulation preference.
What that rules out
An aqueous product without emulsification. Anything sold as water-soluble has had emulsifiers added to overcome the same constraint.
What the carrier also does
Determines the physical handling: viscosity, drop size, mouthfeel and how the product behaves at low temperature.
Its share of the bottle
The large majority by volume, on any ordinary consumer product.
The common carriers
Fractionated coconut oil
A processed fraction of coconut oil consisting largely of medium-chain triglycerides. Liquid at room temperature, neutral in taste, very stable.
Hemp seed oil
Cold-pressed from the seed. Distinctly flavoured, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, and correspondingly less stable.
Olive oil
Familiar, stable, and strongly flavoured. Used less often in this category and entirely viable.
Others
Sunflower, rapeseed and various blends appear. Each behaves according to its fatty acid composition.
What actually differs between them
Oxidative stability
Determined by the degree of unsaturation. Saturated and monounsaturated oils keep considerably better than polyunsaturated ones.
Taste
The largest practical difference for most people, and the one that determines whether a product is tolerable to use.
Viscosity
Which affects drop size and mouthfeel, and which varies with temperature for all of them.
Allergen status
Coconut is a tree nut for allergen labelling purposes in some jurisdictions. It matters and it is frequently overlooked.
The stability question in detail
Why it matters
An oxidised carrier tastes rancid and the product becomes unpleasant well before the active fraction has meaningfully degraded.
Which oils go first
Those high in polyunsaturated fatty acids. Hemp seed oil is in this group, which is why it has a shorter practical shelf life.
What slows it
Cool, dark storage and a full bottle. The same measures that protect everything else in the bottle.
What it looks like
A sharp, stale or paint-like note. It is distinctive and once recognised it is unmistakable.

The appeal
It comes from the same plant, which is aesthetically satisfying and commercially useful.
The practical drawback
Lower oxidative stability and a strong flavour. It is the least stable common option.
What it contributes nutritionally
A fatty acid profile that is genuinely favourable in general dietary terms. That is a property of the oil and not of anything else in the bottle.
What it does not do
Change anything about the active fraction. The carrier and the extract are separate ingredients.
Claims about carriers
Enhanced absorption
Claims that a particular carrier improves uptake. Some have laboratory support in general terms and none is an authorised health claim.
Why we do not build on them
Because they concern effects and authorised claims are what governs statements of that kind. The register is the reference.
What can be said
That carriers differ in composition, stability and taste. All three are compositional facts.
How to read such claims
As positioning. If a mechanism were established well enough to state, it would be in the register.
What the label must tell you
The ingredient list
In descending order of quantity. The carrier is generally first and its identity should be stated specifically.
Allergen declaration
Where the carrier is an allergen listed in the framework, it must be emphasised in the ingredient list.
What specific means
Fractionated coconut oil rather than vegetable oil. A generic term is not adequate identification.
What to do if it is vague
Ask. It is a basic composition question and a seller should answer it immediately.
Reading the ingredient list
The order
Descending by quantity. The first entry dominates the bottle.
What should be there
The carrier, the extract or isolate, and anything added such as flavourings or terpenes.
What sometimes is not
Added terpenes folded into a spectrum description, and emulsifiers on water-based products.
The check
Whether the list explains the whole bottle. If something is present that is not listed, that is a labelling question.
Matching the carrier to the use
For daily use
Stability and taste dominate. A neutral, stable carrier is the practical choice for most people.
For a short-lived product
Less critical, since it will be used before stability becomes the limiting factor.
For an allergy
The carrier is the whole question, and a specific ingredient list is what answers it.
For cooking or mixing
The carrier determines behaviour with heat and with other ingredients. It is worth knowing which one you have.
Why the carrier is under-discussed
It is not the interesting ingredient
Attention goes to the active fraction, which is a small share of the bottle and the reason for the purchase.
It is not differentiating
Most sellers use one of the same few carriers, so there is little commercial reason to emphasise it.
It is where the cost is not
Carriers are inexpensive relative to the extract, so the choice is rarely a cost decision.
What that leaves
An ingredient constituting most of the product, chosen for reasons the buyer rarely learns, and which determines much of the experience.
The crystallisation question
What happens
Solid particles appearing in a previously clear oil, usually after cold storage.
The cause
The compound exceeding its solubility in that carrier at that temperature and coming out of solution.
Whether it is a fault
No. It indicates a high concentration relative to the carrier’s capacity, which is a formulation characteristic.
What to do
Warm the bottle gently and shake until uniform. The whole bottle must be homogeneous before any is measured.
Fractionated coconut oil in detail
What fractionation means
Separating the oil into components by melting point, and keeping the fraction that stays liquid at room temperature.
Why that fraction
Because whole coconut oil is solid at ordinary temperatures, which would make a dropper bottle unusable for much of the year.
What it consists of
Predominantly medium-chain triglycerides, which are saturated and therefore very resistant to oxidation.
Why it dominates
Neutral taste, liquid across the normal temperature range, and the longest practical shelf life of the common options. Three properties that suit a consumer product.
Hemp seed oil in detail
What it is
Cold-pressed from the seed of the same plant, which contains none of the compounds the extract provides.
The composition
High in polyunsaturated fatty acids, with a favourable balance in general dietary terms. That is a genuine property of the oil.
The drawbacks
Strong grassy flavour, and low oxidative stability. It is the option most likely to become unpleasant before the bottle is finished.
Why it is used anyway
Because it comes from the same plant, which is commercially appealing and aesthetically coherent.
Olive oil in detail
The properties
Predominantly monounsaturated, therefore reasonably stable, with a strong and familiar flavour.
Where it suits
Products where the flavour is acceptable or wanted, and anywhere stability matters more than neutrality.
Why it is less common here
The flavour dominates, and consumer expectation in this category leans toward neutral carriers.
Its advantage
Familiarity. It is a food most people already keep and understand, which counts for something.
What a carrier cannot do
Change the active content
The extract contributes what it contributes. The carrier is a solvent and a vehicle.
Fix a poor extract
An unpleasant extract in a neutral carrier is an unpleasant product. The carrier masks nothing.
Extend the active fraction’s life indefinitely
It can go rancid first, which limits the product regardless of how the extract is holding up.
Justify a large premium
Carriers are inexpensive relative to everything else in the bottle. A price difference attributed to the carrier is doing other work.
The emulsified products
What they are
Water-based formats where the oil phase is dispersed as fine droplets, stabilised by emulsifiers.
Why they exist
To make drinks and similar formats possible, which the underlying solubility would otherwise rule out.
What is added
Emulsifiers, and frequently preservatives and other additives that an oil product does not need.
What to check
The full ingredient list. An emulsified product has more ingredients than an oil one, and all of them belong on the label.
The question worth asking a seller
Which carrier, specifically
Named rather than described. It is a one-word answer that any seller has.
Why they chose it
The answer separates operations that formulated deliberately from those that bought a finished product and labelled it.
What a good answer sounds like
A reason grounded in stability, taste or viscosity. Any of the three is a real formulation consideration.
What a poor answer sounds like
A health claim about the carrier, which is both unauthorised and a sign that the choice was made for marketing reasons.
How to tell if a carrier has turned
The smell
Sharp, stale, or faintly like old paint. It is distinctive and once recognised it cannot be mistaken for anything else.
The taste
Bitter and lingering in a way a fresh oil is not. It is unpleasant enough that most people notice before they think about why.
When it happens
Sooner on polyunsaturated carriers, and much sooner on a bottle stored warm, in light, or half empty for months.
What it means for the contents
The active fraction may be entirely intact while the product is unusable. They degrade on different timescales and the carrier frequently loses first.
The bottle itself
Amber glass
Standard for a reason: it blocks part of the spectrum that drives oxidation in both the carrier and the extract.
Size relative to use
A large bottle that takes six months to finish spends most of that time half full of air. A smaller one finished quickly keeps better.
The dropper cap
Convenient, and it admits air every time it is used. It is a trade most people accept without noticing it exists.
What that suggests
Buying a size you will finish within a couple of months, rather than the largest available. The per-milligram saving on a big bottle is real and so is the degradation.
The one line to take away
Read the first ingredient
It is most of the bottle, it decides taste and shelf life, and it answers the allergy question. One line on a label, read in a second, covering the majority of what you are buying.

The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
How this connects to the rest
With the molecule
The carrier exists because of the solubility properties of the compound. It is a structural requirement.
With drops
Viscosity differs between carriers, which is one reason drop size differs between products.
With storage
Carrier stability is frequently the limiting factor on shelf life, ahead of the active fraction.

We check what can be checked from documents: official registers, declared contents, certificates of analysis, arithmetic. We test no products, rank nothing, and assert no effects.
There is something odd about a category where buyers scrutinise a fraction of a bottle and ignore the rest of it. The carrier determines whether a product tastes acceptable, how long it lasts before going rancid, and whether someone with an allergy can use it at all.
All three are on the ingredient list, in the first entry, which takes a second to read. It is the cheapest information in the whole purchase and it concerns the majority of what is in the bottle.
