What leaves first, and fastest
A flower loses its smell long before it loses its content. Six months after harvest the certificate still shows the same CBD percentage, and the product bears no resemblance to what it smelled like at the start.
This is not a contradiction. The two families of molecules involved have neither the same mass, nor the same boiling point, nor the same sensitivity to oxygen. One evaporates at room temperature and the other does not.
This page describes the four mechanisms that remove aroma, the order in which they strike, what each stage of the supply chain does to them, and what a buyer can actually do to slow the process once the product is in the house.

Evaporation
The principal one. These compounds pass into the gas phase at room temperature without needing any particular heat. That is exactly why they can be smelled: what reaches the nose is what has already left the flower.
Oxidation
Atmospheric oxygen alters their structure. The transformed compound no longer smells the same, and the change is irreversible. A jar opened every day renews the air and restarts the process each time.
Isomerisation
Under heat or in an acidic medium, some compounds rearrange without losing anything. The molecule keeps its formula and changes its shape, and the associated smell changes with it.
Photodegradation
Light, particularly its ultraviolet component, breaks certain bonds. It is the mechanism easiest to eliminate entirely, since an opaque container removes it.
The order of losses
The lightest first
Monoterpenes, ten carbon atoms, go first. Pinene and limonene are among the first to disappear from a flower left in open air.
The heaviest afterwards
Sesquiterpenes, fifteen carbon atoms, resist considerably longer. Caryophyllene still appears on profiles where the light notes have vanished completely.
The perceptible result
The profile does not weaken uniformly: it deforms. A flower that smelled of citrus and pepper ends up smelling only of pepper, which gives the impression of a different product.
What this allows you to guess
A profile skewed toward heavy notes, on a variety known to be fruity, suggests ageing. It is an indication, never proof.
🔴 What drying determines
The most expensive stage
This is where the loss is greatest and least recoverable. What leaves during drying never returns, whatever the quality of the storage that follows.
Temperature
A slow dry between fifteen and twenty degrees keeps considerably more than an accelerated dry at thirty or above. Each additional degree accelerates the evaporation of the most volatile compounds.
Ventilation
Air that moves too much carries the compounds away as they escape. Air that is too still encourages growth. The compromise is set finely and it makes all the difference.
Duration
A dry of ten to fifteen days gives a result unlike anything a three-day pass through a warm room produces. The second exists because it frees the drying space sooner.
What curing does
The principle
After drying, the material rests in a closed container, opened briefly each day at first. It is a phase of equalisation rather than of further drying.
What happens in it
The residual moisture distributes evenly through the material, the most aggressive compounds soften, and the profile stabilises. Well-rested flower smells better than it did leaving the dryer.
The usual duration
Two to four weeks for most of the perceptible benefit. Beyond that, oxidative loss begins to outweigh the gain from equalisation.
The risk
Poorly managed humidity during this phase leads to growth. It is the principal argument of producers who skip the stage.
Extraction and heat
Hot processes
Any temperature above a hundred degrees degrades a substantial part of the profile. Extracts obtained this way are often almost odourless.
Cold processes
Supercritical carbon dioxide extraction or low-temperature methods preserve more, at higher cost and often with lower yield.
Distillation
It deliberately separates the fractions. A cannabinoid distillate retains nothing of the original profile, which is sometimes precisely the point.
Re-aromatisation
Many processed products then receive added terpenes. The practice is legal, but food information rules require the ingredient list to say so.
What storage destroys
The residual air
A jar filled halfway holds a volume of oxygen equivalent to the volume of material. That reserve feeds oxidation continuously, without any handling being needed.
Each opening
Opening renews the air and releases the compounds accumulated in the headspace. Taking out several days’ worth at once beats opening every morning.
Ambient heat
A ten-degree difference between a low cupboard and a shelf near a heat source appreciably changes the rate of loss over several months.
Light
The simplest mechanism to remove. An opaque container or storage in the dark eliminates it entirely, at no cost and no inconvenience.
🔴 What can actually be done
Choose the container
Tinted glass or metal, a closure with a gasket, a size matched to the quantity remaining. Decanting into a smaller vessel as the stock falls reduces the residual air.
Choose the place
Cool, dry, dark, stable. A low cupboard in a lightly heated room does better than any complicated arrangement.
Space out the openings
This is the most effective habit after the choice of container, and it costs nothing. Every opening avoided is a loss avoided.
What does not work
The freezer makes the glands brittle and causes condensation on return to room temperature. The refrigerator raises the same moisture problem at every removal.
The role of humidity
Too high
Above roughly sixty-five per cent relative humidity the risk of growth becomes real. That is a problem of a different nature from aroma loss, and a far more serious one.
Too low
Below fifty-five per cent the material becomes brittle. The gland heads detach at the slightest contact and end up at the bottom of the container.
The usual range
Between fifty-eight and sixty-two per cent the material stays supple and the microbiological risk stays low. Two-way packs hold that range.
What this changes about aroma
Correct humidity does not preserve terpenes in itself. It only stops the material degrading mechanically and shedding its glands.
What a report shows
The measured total
Expressed as a mass percentage. On a flower the total rarely exceeds a few per cent; a value around two is already high.
The distribution
This is what describes the smell, not the sum. Two flowers with the same total can smell radically different depending on the top three compounds.
The date
Decisive. A profile measured at packaging and one measured six months later do not mean the same thing, and only the first is usually published.
What is missing
No report indicates how fast a batch will age. That figure is not measured and depends entirely on conditions after sale.
Comparing two batches over time
The method
Ask the same producer for the profiles of two harvests of the same variety at different dates. The gap documents their consistency.
What it reveals
A producer whose profiles vary widely between batches controls their drying poorly. The genetics do not change from one harvest to the next.
The limit of the exercise
The year’s climate, the harvest date and crop management also contribute. The gap is not attributable to drying alone.
What it is worth
An indication of seriousness. A producer willing to supply several reports rarely has much to hide.
What the nose perceives
The detection threshold
Some of these compounds are perceptible at concentrations that ordinary instruments struggle to quantify. On this specific point the nose is more sensitive than a standard analysis.
What it does not do
It does not quantify, it does not distinguish a natural compound from an added one, and it adapts within seconds to a continuous smell.
The useful technique
Smell cold, from a container closed for several hours, opening briefly. The headspace has concentrated what remains, and that is the moment when the gap between two batches is clearest.
The honest limit
An olfactory impression does not transmit, does not document itself and does not compare between sellers. It serves for choosing, not for proving.
What a smell says on arrival
When it counts
The first hours after delivery are the only window in which a complaint stays simple. After a few days it becomes impossible to separate what was missing on arrival from what has been lost since.
The technique
Open the container, smell immediately, close it, then repeat an hour later once the headspace has rebuilt. The second impression is more reliable than the first.
What justifies a question
An absent smell, or one plainly at odds with the seller’s description. A merely quieter smell than expected does not: variation between batches is normal.
What the framework provides
Consumer rights rules give a fourteen-day withdrawal right on distance purchases, with exceptions depending on the nature of the product. That is the setting in which the question arises.
Common errors
Believing aroma measures potency
The two families are independent. A heavily scented flower can test low, and the reverse is equally true.
Confusing aroma loss with non-compliance
The regulatory threshold applies to total THC, which does not evaporate. A product can have lost all its scent and remain entirely compliant.
Trying to recover a lost profile
Nothing restores it. Processes claiming otherwise add external compounds, which is a different operation and belongs on the label.
Storing cold as a precaution
The most frequent reflex and the most counterproductive. Condensation on return to room temperature does more damage than the gain it seeks.
Why nobody measures the loss
What would be needed
Two analyses of the same batch at two dates, with the storage conditions between them recorded. That is straightforward to arrange and it is essentially never done.
Why it is not
Because a second analysis costs the same as the first and answers a question nobody is obliged to answer. No regulation requires it and no buyer withholds a purchase for want of it.
What producers know anyway
Anyone drying and curing material observes the loss directly across a season. The knowledge exists throughout the sector and it stays informal, which is why published figures on it are scarce.
What this leaves
A well-established phenomenon with almost no public quantification. That is an unusual position for something so consequential, and it is worth naming rather than working around.
A short glossary
Volatility
A compound’s tendency to pass into the gas phase. It depends on molecular mass and boiling point and it explains the order of losses.
Monoterpene
A compound with ten carbon atoms, light and highly volatile. The first category lost during drying and storage.
Sesquiterpene
A compound with fifteen carbon atoms, heavier and more persistent. It survives on depleted profiles.
Isomerisation
Rearrangement of a molecule that keeps its formula while changing its structure, and therefore its smell.
Headspace
The volume of air above the material in a closed container. It concentrates volatile compounds and serves for olfactory assessment.
The five checks that apply to any product
The batch certificate
Request it with the number printed on the packaging. A general document for the product line does not cover this batch, and those differences are exactly what it should record.
Total THC
Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
How this connects to the rest
With drying
It is the decisive stage and the one entirely outside a buyer’s reach. Everything is settled before the material is bagged.
With storage
What the buyer controls begins at delivery. Container, place and opening frequency cover essentially everything available.
With measured ageing
The CBN row on a certificate documents a duration. Terpene loss follows the same clock without any row quantifying it.
With price
An old batch sold at the price of fresh is badly paid for. Smell is the first accessible indication, before any document is requested.
What this is for in practice
To judge on arrival
Open, smell, close. A weak smell on a variety known to be expressive justifies a question to the seller before anything else.
To organise a stock
Decant into a container matched to the quantity, store cool and dark, and open only at spaced intervals.
To interpret a profile
Look at the top three compounds and the date of the report rather than the total. The distribution says what the sum conceals.
Not to misdirect a complaint
Aroma loss after several months is normal. The same loss on arrival is not, and that distinction is what makes a claim admissible.
