Same variety, same content, and yet
Two products can carry the same variety name, the same stated content, and the same category term, and still be noticeably different. That is not a failure of anyone’s honesty. It is what happens when the stated figures cover a small fraction of what determines a product.
Six things account for most of it, and none of them appears on a label. Knowing what they are makes the difference explicable rather than suspicious, and it changes what is worth asking about.

What it usually is
A commercial name, applied by whoever is selling, with no register behind it and no verification.
Where a real name exists
The European common catalogue of varieties of agricultural plant species lists varieties that have passed a formal examination. That name means something specific.
How often it is used
Rarely on consumer products. Most names in circulation are commercial rather than registered.
What follows
Two products with the same name may come from genuinely different plants. The name is not the identifier it appears to be.
The second: the same variety varies
Within a seed population
Siblings differ in structure, timing, aroma and composition. A variety describes a population, not a specification.
Between crops
The same genetics grown in different conditions express differently. Light, temperature, nutrition and water all leave traces.
Between years
Outdoor material varies with the season. It is ordinary agricultural variation and it is not recorded anywhere.
What that means
Identical naming does not imply identical material even in the best case.
The third: the aromatic profile is not measured
What differs
Terpene composition varies substantially between batches, and it is what most people actually perceive as difference.
Why it is invisible
A terpene profile is a separate analytical commission and it is rarely included on a certificate.
What the cannabinoid figures do
Match, while the aromatic profile differs completely. Two products can be identical on the panel that is published and unlike each other on the one that is not.
The consequence
Most perceived differences between similar products sit in the fraction nobody measured.
The fourth: age and storage
The clock
Degradation starts at harvest and runs continuously. Aromatic compounds go first, over months, and the principal compound follows far more slowly.
What the certificate shows
The composition at the analysis date. Months later the material is not what was measured, particularly in the aromatic fraction.
The storage variable
Between production and your hand, material passes through a warehouse, a courier and a shelf. None of those conditions is recorded.
What a buyer can check
The analysis date, which approximates production. It is the closest available freshness indicator and it is on the certificate.
The fifth: processing after the measurement
Handling
Every operation between analysis and packaging costs something. Sorting, trimming, weighing and transfer all remove material and expose surfaces.
Temperature
Material worked or stored warm loses aromatic compounds. Nothing records whether it was.
Time in transit
A parcel in a hot vehicle for a day is a real event that leaves no trace on any document.
Why this is invisible
Because certification happens once, upstream, and everything afterwards is undocumented.
The sixth: the comparison itself
The conditions
Temperature, time of day, what preceded it, and expectation. All of them move, and none is recorded.
Adaptation
The nose stops registering a continuous smell within seconds. A comparison of four samples produces four decreasingly reliable readings.
Memory
Comparing against a remembered impression is comparing against something that drifts. It reliably moves toward the most recent experience.
The correction
A reference sample kept sealed, and a written note. It converts a comparison against memory into one against material.
Which of the six a buyer can check
Checkable
The analysis date, the batch match, the panel coverage, and whether a terpene profile exists. Four things, all on documents.
Partly checkable
The variety, by asking whether it is a catalogue name. The answer is informative either way.
Not checkable
Storage in transit, processing after analysis, and the aromatic profile where no panel was commissioned.
What to do about the last group
Judge by the senses on arrival, and keep a record. It is the only instrument available for what documents do not cover.
What a seller should be able to tell you
The batch and its certificate
Immediately, with the code matching. This is the baseline.
The analysis date
Directly, without looking it up as a favour. It is on the document they should already have.
The variety
Ideally the catalogue name, and honestly if they only know a commercial one.
Whether the formulation changed
Between two purchases. They know, and it explains a share of perceived differences by itself.
What none of this means
That someone is lying
Six real mechanisms account for the differences. Deception is not required and is rarely the explanation.
That the products are bad
Variation is what agricultural material does. A batch differing from the last is not a defective batch.
That comparison is pointless
It is worth doing carefully. The point is knowing what a difference can and cannot tell you.
That documents are useless
They cover four of the six. That is most of what is knowable and it is worth reading.
The batch-to-batch question for a seller
What consistency indicates
An operation with a stable supply chain, testing regularly, and rotating stock. It is the strongest available signal about how a seller works.
How to observe it
Buy the same reference twice, several weeks apart, and compare. Two purchases establish more than any amount of reading.
What variation indicates
Either genuine batch variation, which is normal, or an unstable supply chain. Distinguishing them takes more than two purchases.
Why this is the useful test
Because it measures outcomes rather than descriptions, and because it is the one property no document records.
Where the six sit in the chain
Before the plant existed
The first two: what the name identifies, and how much a population varies. Both are settled by the time a seed is sown.
During growing and processing
The third and part of the fifth: which aromatic compounds developed, and what handling cost them before anything was packaged.
After the measurement
The fourth and the rest of the fifth: age, storage and everything between a laboratory and a shelf.
At the moment of comparison
The sixth, which happens in your kitchen and is the only one you control completely.
What a certificate covers of all this
The composition at one moment
Cannabinoid content, and whatever contaminant panels were commissioned, on a sample from one batch.
What that answers
Whether the material is what it says it is, and whether it is clean. Two important questions.
What it leaves untouched
Everything about aroma, everything after the analysis date, and everything about the conditions of your comparison.
Why that is not a criticism
A certificate is a measurement, not a history. Expecting it to cover handling and freshness is expecting the wrong thing from the right document.
The most common single explanation
Age
More perceived differences trace to it than to any other cause on this page. Material six months apart in age differs noticeably even when everything else matches.
Why it is under-recognised
Because nothing on a package states when material was made, and the analysis date is on a document most people never open.
What it looks like
A thinner, flatter aroma with the brighter notes gone, on material whose content figures are essentially unchanged.

The second most common
A formulation change
Reformulation happens routinely and requires no announcement. A product can change carrier, concentration or supplier under the same name.
Why it is invisible
Because the name and the packaging stay the same. The ingredient list changes and almost nobody compares.
The check
A photograph of the label at each purchase, compared side by side. Five seconds at purchase, and the comparison is available whenever it is needed.
What to ask
Whether the formulation changed between two given batches. A seller knows and should say.
The version of this that is a real problem
Content that does not match
Where the certificate figure and the label figure diverge, or where the batch code does not match the document supplied.
Why that is different
The six mechanisms on this page are ordinary variation. A documentation mismatch is not variation; it is a specific failure.
What to do
Raise it, with the batch code and photographs of both. It is a reasonable question with a factual answer.
How often it happens
Often enough to be worth checking, and rarely enough that most purchases are fine. Checking costs a minute.
Two minutes that resolve most cases
First, the two analysis dates
Pull the certificates for both batches and compare when each was tested. A gap of several months explains an aroma difference on its own.
Second, the two labels
Compare the ingredient lists. A changed carrier, a changed concentration or a changed order of ingredients all show up immediately and all are common.
Third, the two panels
Compare the cannabinoid rows. If they match closely, the difference is not in what was measured, which narrows it to the aromatic fraction or to the conditions.
What is left after those three
Storage, handling and your own comparison conditions. At that point a sealed reference sample is the only remaining instrument, and it only helps if you kept one.

Delta-9-THC plus THCA multiplied by 0.877, because THCA becomes THC under heat and the limit applies to the sum, not to either value alone.
Price per milligram
A division, not an opinion. The only figure that makes two products comparable, whatever the format, process and pack size.
The claims
Without an authorisation number in the EU Register these are assertions, not data — and for cannabidiol that register contains no authorised entry to this day.
The seller’s details
Company name, address and contact. Without them there is also no counterparty to turn to if something turns out to be wrong.
